I am learning how to "paint" pet portraits. This is my first attempt. It is a lot of work. Mostly using mixer brushes.

That background with those eyes . . . Wow. I really like it. The silkiness of the fur is appealing, too. I think I wish the whiskers didn't stand out so much, but I'm not sure.

Her eyes and whiskers stand out. The color of the eyes matching the color of the bg is really nice. I wonder about making the eyes a little more natural? Lovely furry coat.
What is involved in painting digitally? Good for you for trying something new.

Yes, those eyes matching the BG is wonderful! Would love to hear more about your technique - I've been thinking about trying to learn it but no time for yet another project.

I've played with Corel Painter with a lot of fun, and cats were a favorite subject. Haven't done that for a while, though. You may have inspired me...

Thanks for the comments , I am taking an online course by Cheryl Butler. I wanted to learn to use the brushes more. This picture took forever to do. We are taught to really intensify the eyes, and I agree the whiskers need some work. They were the hardest part. I do need to make them look more natural. I appreciate the input everyone! Once I have mastered the brushes, I think I will be able to experiment more.

I'd wondered when you mentioned about learning to paint pet portraits if you were taking Cheryl Butler's course. The illustration on her site related to the course has a background that's similar in some ways to the dog's hair but not it's eyes, so I'm guessing the eye-dea for the background color was yours.

Good for you to branch out into something new. Good start, I think. I'm not sure what all is involved in the process, so don't feel expert enough to critique. I do like the eyes.

The eyes are captivating. I am with the others who have no experience with this medium. It will be enjoyable to follow your progress with this technique.

Very nice Jackie! I knew you would be good at that and I see that I was not wrong. It is somewhat difficult and tedious, but I think the results are well worth it. Nice job for an early or a later one for that matter. Looking forward to seeing more of your paintings.

Paul, it is a technique that uses a digitizing tablet and pen in place of brush and canvas. In brief, the mixer brush allows you to mix colors from the canvas with other colors in the canvas itself or from a "well" that you fill with color. It is really quite amazing what you can do with that brush.

Thanks Kerry, it is a lot of work, a labour of love really. This was my first attempt. I appreciate your comment.
