Another of the migratory waders to visit Australia, the Common Greenshank is relatively common but, with the Eastern Curlew, it is one of the wariest. The Australian birds are believed to breed on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East and spend the austral summer widely dispersed around Australia, including inland. The bird in the frame was unusual in allowing me to approach reasonably close when I found it at the Hunter River estuary on 3 March.

Thanks everyone for your feedback on this one. I am aware that the double eye highlight is not to everyone's taste and I always find myself in a dilemma about removing the lower highlight arising from reflection off water. It is perfectly natural and I wonder why people object to it - they never give a reason. Regards, Ian
