    Hello Everyone!

Thought I'd post an image of this young fellow before the month is over.

Mr. Steve K. said the other day wildebeests were not pretty, but maybe this one will make him change his mind

Subject was running to catch up with some other youngsters, I liked the cheerfulness in their stride so I took a few frames, here's one of them:)

Image taken at about 10:00 am so the light was pretty harsh already. At the time we spotted those wildebeests running I was sitting on my beanbag to make myself taller and see better, so no support

    Nikon D3S
    Nikon 300 F2.8
    ISO 320
    F6.3
    1/2000s

Thank you so much for viewing,

Hi Gabriela - You handled the harsh light well. I like the running/prancing pose. Sharpness and detail look good. Are the youngsters that much lighter than the adults or is he covered in dust? Comp works well and I love the raised tail.

    Rachel

Hi Gabriela. I like the youngster's pose & agree with you, He/She is really beautiful. The only thing that could improve your shot is a better hour with better light.

I still don't think they are pretty but the youngsters do have personality. I love the playing/jumping/bounding pose.

Hi Gabriela! You caught an excellent pose with lovely detail, sharpness and comp. I like the prancing stance and that raised tail! Light handled very well.

Thank you Rachel, Behin, Dumay and Sanjeev

Rachel, those youngsters are even lighter in colour when they are born, as they grow up their colour becomes dark grey with a blueish sheen. Your observation is correct, this young wildebeest was quite "dusty" and I presume he had been rolling in the sand, something that adults often do. I was careful not to over sharpen when I processed and tried to maintain that soft and almost matted appearance of the subject's hair. The eye of this species is always sheltered by some very long lashes but I was lucky to at least capture this little one with his eyes wide open. I deleted so many nice close-ups because of the eyes!

Behin, I agree with you, sweet light would have been wonderful, I was just happy to capture this at 10:00 am and not during lunch time, so no "liquid air" or too harsh shadows. In the Kalahari, and especially during the summer months (I was there in February), light is sweet from 7 am to 8 am and then from 5pm to 6 pm, the rest of the time is a bit of a struggle but we just love it there so much that we keep going back for more:)

Dumay, as you get older you start to see beauty in all that is young, even ugly wildebeest By the way, they can be fun to watch and so entertaining. Some years ago we sat for two hours watching this herd of Wildebeests, all lying in the shade of some trees near Rooiputs camp. Well, not all really, one fellow decided to get up and cause trouble, kept jumping in-between the others and nudging them, even stepped on their tails in the process. A few of them got upset and started chasing him around, in his rush to get away he bumped into an old sign post and then quite rattled he finally decided to lie down as well...I will look for this old folder and see if I can find a few images for Story Sequences Forum:)

Thank you all for viewing and comments, I appreciate it

Its funny you talk about them being entertaining...about 2 months ago I watched a youngster chase a group of male Impalas around for about half an hour, these male Impala were so confused running away from this crazy young Wildebeest, you could almost hear them thinking "This doesn't look like any Lion or Leopard I have ever seen"...One of my highlight sightings of the year so far.

Hi Gabriela, sweet image, love the 'spring' in his step, boing, boing, boing...

For me the subtle shadow adds to the overall image.

Hi Gabriela sorry to say even at this age they do look already ........ sorry to say ..... somehow dumb , looking in that face .

Regarding the image you timed it well getting the youngster flying over the Kalahari sand . Well framed with very good colors , overall nice tones and a ton of detail in the fur. Nicely processed with great IQ , you are making your way now .... at least i feel so .
Overall very clean and simple but yet effective frame .

You īve done a good job

    Cheers Andreas
