Hi all i thought i post another Gigolo , not that much spectacular though i guess.
I got this young Waterbuck on the wide plains of St. Lucia Wetlands Park in SA , close to Andre and Gabrielasī home .
He was part of a bachelor group that was feeding on the plains .

    Canon EOS 1Dx
    EF 200-400 at 560 mm
    HH

    F 8 ; Iso 250 ; 1/320 sec ; settings a bit weird

Processed with DPP 4 and PS CC ; cropped for comp , minor gardening in BG ; kept it simple in editing this time ; pushed the colors a bit apart in LAB at low percentage , looked to yellow dominated from my POV .

Thanks for looking and commenting to my previous posting .

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas, another nice, clean portrait, you certainly seem to have nailed the detail and clarity here, even if you thought the settings were 'a bit weird' , in fact having that slight movement in the front hoof worked well. The environment is what it is, but personally for me it lacks the interest you have had in past series of images, but nothing you could do because it's within a plain environment, looks well manicured due to the grazing, compared to the more wilder habitats, if you know what I mean? On the laptop the colour looks ok and I think the grass does reflect the light/time of day.

Hi Andreas - A simple but very effective portrait of the waterbuck. Nice walking pose. I agree with Steve about the manicured grass but not sure what gardening you did. Maybe leaving it as it was gives it less of a manicured feel? Colors, tones, sharpening and detail all look good.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Andreas, a very nice look at this Waterbuck. Great head angle, very nice sharpness and detail and the subject pops from the clean BG.

A lovely proud stance to this bachelor! Funny how we how preconceived notions of a "wild" habitat that seem to exclude this short-grass look, even though it is natural.

    Hello Andreas!

Herewith I confirm that this as natural a habitat as it can get

...Can I tell you all a bit more about it?

This special place is known as the Western Shores, and is part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, home to a variety of species and also declared in 1985 a World Heritage Site. Here the world's largest terrestrial mammals share the ecosystem with the world's oldest fish (the coelacanth) and also the largest marine mammal, the whale. For interest' sake, in terms of biodiversity, 521 species of birds have been identified so far in this area. The Park consists of lake systems, swamps, reed and papyrus wetlands, savannah, vegetated coastal dunes and lovely sandy beaches. It also extends into the Indian Ocean as a marine sanctuary.

During his stay Andreas visited those lovely coastal plains which are generally swampy and home to large herds of waterbuck (we once counted a herd of 40 individuals!), reed buck, hippo and buffalo. Interesting to mention that more than 2200 flowering plants were identified in this same habitat, including water plants. In summer the grassland is often flooded.
Thank you Andreas for sharing this image - in terms of techs I believe this is spot on, and I love the detail on that lovely brown/silver fur of this handsome waterbuck, as well as face and horns. Lovely proud pose, this images gives justice to this majestic animal

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Well thanks to all of you for your comments , as always much appreciated .

Gabriela thanks for your additional info on that place ........ even if i did not find it very fruitful to work there , but i have been there just only for one day . So one cannot expect to get the most out of it.

Rachel - gardening was just removing some (3) darker blobs in the BG , they added nothing to the image cause they have been at the borders of the frame.

Steve by weird setting i meant the SS speed was simply too low , in the next moment the little Bachelor started running ......... i was ending up with 30 frames all blurred , would call this operator error !!!

    Thanks again , cheers Andreas

Think I would agree on that Andreas , but on a serious note, I have been playing with M mode/Auto ISO as the 1DX really seems to make the difference, I know several times I have question it, especially with Jon A, but with some simple set-up changes and remembering about what needs adjusting in the 'Case' menu, it's bolstering things IMHO.

Hey Steve it is well easy with hindsight and in theory .......... and in theory i know it all ......... well a lot , but then is the work in the field coming into play and one has not all his knowledge just open in the front of the brain , LOL. So digging it out takes time ......... and then the animals start to make funny things and the operator becomes puzzled what to do .......
That is real life photography of a wanna be Pro ........... and from one second to another one is just a dumb rookie . So this is my theory , LOL. and i am pretty sure i will do it again. I am better at the screen to overcome my field faults ......... because the images cannot run away from me !!!!!!

    Cheers Andreas

I like the simplicity of this image. The mid stride pose and head angle add up for a very nice pose. I like seeing images of these antelope, such cool looking horns!
