    Default Take that!

A cheetah cub is about to take a swipe at it's sibling!
These were two (of 4) cheetah cubs now 7 weeks old that were sharing a play time session after dining on a baby wildebeest that mum had taken down earlier in the morning.

The dappled lighting made for tricky shooting conditions, but I feel it's also what makes this image.

D4s 500 f/4VR 1/1600s f/9 ISO800 -.3EV. Crop to portrait, bean bag from front pax seat, curves, levels, S/H + TK lumo masking to get the balance right. ACR, PS CC '14.

    Ndutu/Serengeti, Northern Tanzania.

    C & C most welcome

    Cheers
    Marc

They are so darn cute Marc! Lovely composition, great amount of detail and eye contact. I like those little paws and the dappled light is OK with me.

Hi Marc very cute and you have been very lucky to get this opportunity to shoot this little guys .
I like the framing and the pose of the two . By knowing about such difficult light situation , you did well with the PP . It just looks a bit rough from the detail POV , in other words a bit coarse from POV .
I do not know to what extend you used S/H , but S/H is giving that look . There are other softer ways to do the same effect , but this is taking bit more work than just wang some sliders and press ok .

I think the image is worth to try a softer approach to open up shadowed toning down HL . Just my take .

I'm happy for you to have the RAW file, but just to let you know I'm not casually moving sliders around there is a thought process here, I used around -40% in ACR before taking it into TK....... I just don't record down the exact % as you do.
That's just the type of PS editor I am. My guess is the USM used when taking it down sizing for the web. I'm basing that on the fact that my TIFF file looks fine.

Marc, it seems those little guys were posing for you- what a great sighting!

During our last trip to the KTP we met a lady photographer whom we have had a chat with from time to time, as we often sat for hours at waterholes together waiting for things to happen. I remember her saying that baby cheetahs have this particular expression on their face, kind of wild and untamed and "don't mess with me" look. I now know what she is talking about

Love what you captured here and the crop/presentation is great, superb pose from the little ones! Indeed very difficult light and I looked at your settings to see how you decided to handle the conditions, all looks 100% save for the -0.3 EV which I do not understand?

The image appears a tad crunchy to me, could it be the effect of lifting those shadows? Colours are fine and that raised paw just so cute, well done again on yet another special image Marc

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Marc with wanging sliders i meant the sliders within the S/H command in PS , from your description you used that as far as i understood . I do find this tool more or less useless , cause it gives you a crunchy look by the algorithm used , specially when used at stronger settings . Plus you have to use it at the very end of the processing to make it really work .
As i do not see the TIFF file i can just say what i see here , hope this is ok with you .
And if you are fine with the output , it is ok with me .

    Cheers Andreas

Totally agree, I never use the PS S/H, I'm talking about the Shadows tab (NOT S/H my apology) in ACR which I find very useful ...... at least for me anyway.

Hi Marc - Very cute and the vertical presentation works well. The light was very difficult but you handled it well. My first thought before reading the other comments was also that it appeared a little crunchy, perhaps oversharpened.

    Rachel

I prefer the poses here to your last post but I prefer the PP from the last one. TFS Marc!

    Cute moment indeed Marc!
My initial thoughts (before reading the comments) was also that the fur looks crunchy and that the shadows look a tad (very slightly) light?

Hello Marc ! Wat a cute moment and another amazing sighting for you. Always pleasing to see little cubs . I tried to play with the shadows and highlights with this image and coincidentally today this is the second image of yours that i have reworked on , like to play with your images
