    Default Young Rhino Roadblock

    Attached Images Attached Images

We came across this young rhino calf and its mom somewhere in the bush. Due to the type of habitat and location we could not leave the road and the calf did not want to leave the road. I shot this over the hood/bonnet. I think this road shot helps to show that this youngster has a bit of attitude. Hopefully, it will help him/her survive the poachers.

Awesome sighting Rachel. I like the way he is stiffly posing for you and the comp is very nice with the inclusion of both tire tracks adding a sense of balance to the image. Nicely processed as well.

    Hi Rachel

Like this little one very much!

Lots of detail on calf, HL and shadows on calf handled well.

The little blade of grass on side of mouth adds to the moment.

Looks like it was close to the river, where was mom?
    Regards

    Andre.

Hi Rachel a very attractive road block from my POV .
Looks like a healthy little rhino as it stands there , always good to see one in that shape. Nice detail and overall good handling of HL and SH , very pleasing colors , too.
I am not becoming friend with the rhino standing that close to the edge and having the road that dominant in the frame even if it is an image about the road.......... block ! If this was mine i would tone down the HL in the sand a bit more , it takes away my eye from the nice subject because of its lightness. But this is just a minor thing .

Thanks Sanjeev, Andre and Andreas. Andre - the mom was just out of the picture grazing. After this brave but brief stance, the youngster kept pretty close to mom as they moved down the road and eventually off into the brush. Andreas - I'll take a look at the highlights in the road.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Dear Rachel,

    Wonderful capture!

I think the POV works in your favour here - it emphasises the subject's head, which seems somehow disproportionately larger than the body: the result is a cuteness factor second to none! Love this toy-like, innocent appearance of the baby rhino, colours are superb and sharpness just where needed, nice detail extracted in the shadow areas - great PP work, comp and presentation!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Nothing much further to add here Rachel other than a moment just to sit back and enjoy the company.
His determined look ties in perfectly with your story, and that's what matters.

Hi Rachel, it was a nice encounter and from recollection, it was the calf who was being more protective of Mom!!! It certainly was a tricky location with all that sand, especially when leaving the island, full throttle to make it across.

I think I agree with Andreas, moving the whole frame more to the right, reducing the road and having more content to the RHS would have been better, and more balanced, I think it was vegetation to the right?? Some nice light on the calf, but again, agree on just addressing the top LHC area, just to pull back those HL's a bit more and even slightly darken the bottom RHC area, just thinking on 'playing' with the light which might add a bit more tonal difference within the image?

Thanks Marc and Steve. Steve - yes, mom was in the vegetation on the right. I don't think she looked up the whole time we were there. She just kept grazing and moving along next to the road. I'll take a look at the tones.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Nice moment here, Rachel. I agree on toning down the HL in the sandy road.
I do like that you can see the feet - 3 toed ungulate indeed, as per classification
