    Default Young Bull Elk

Another image from my recent trip to Yellowstone with Dale. We found a herd of elk with a few young bulls with the cows just off the road near the town of Gardiner. This one posed nicely for me on the ridge.

    Hi Rachel

The hill/BG behind him really makes this image, adding a lot of depth.

Exposure spot on, like the pose.

Lots of detail in mid-tones, love the shiny nose.

I just find the two stones left and right FG a bit distracting..
    Regards

    Andre.

Very nice pose with great colour and detail. I like the separation from the BG and the sharpness is wonderful.

    Hello Rachel,

I cannot tell you how much I like the rich browns of the subject against that grey background, the elk just stands out so well! Beautiful tones, I like the clarity and detail, the stance there from the elk - almost defiant. Thoughtfully composed and presented, great PP work - this is WOW for me!

    Warmest regards,

The image really has a 3D feel and I too am enjoying all the earthy/brown tones coming through here, Rachel, with the subject nicely offset in focal depth and tonal variation.
    Nice low angle too.
Ditto Andre on the "Cornerstones" at the bottom, but not a biggy for me.

Thanks all, glad you like this one. Andre and Morkel - I thought about cropping to remove the rocks but then it was a little tight at the bottom so I left it ff.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Nicely done here Rachel... Looking now in hindsight I bet the 70-200mm wide open would have worked very well with this image blurring out the BG even more! Guess I should have thought of that earlier

Dale - thanks, you may be right but I was also zooming in and out to either include other elk or avoid them depending on location. It was difficult to get one along the ridge with no others or parts of others so changing lenses probably wasn't an option.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, this fellow seems to be posing proud for you, and love the eye contact. You have captured the detail on his coat nicely, and the Elk is separated from the BG very well. No snow in this image

Nicely presented here Rachel, and do agree with Andre that it's that nice BG that adds real separation & depth here.

Hi Rachel, like the BKG and constancy right across the image, provides a great backdrop to give the subject some nice 'pop'. Would have been great to see an image with Dales suggestion as a comparison. Nice one.
