Default G.W. Teal among the highlows and the greens

One of our good scrappy locals, seen among the easy white highlows and the wintergreens.

Mea maxima culpa: shutter was in fact 1/500 and focal length was 400mm. I am just going back to reprocess this picture now, which is precisely why I would welcome your comments

    Hi Jack,
Nice to see you posting again!
I like the wings up position and the nicely shown green on the head.
The big problem for me with this shot is that the ice is blown out and lacks detail. I would try to get as much detail as you can by selecting the ice, then reducing the exposure ( but watch out to not make the ice grey) and if you have NIK Efex I would use Detail Extractor and /or tonal contrast to bring out more detail.
It would have been nice if you had been able to get lower as well to take some of the ice out of play.

Thank you for your consideration, Gail. I am a great fan of "shooting into the sun" so as to achieve an effect like this. But it's not quite high-key and the ice isn't quite working for me either. Although our eyes are different: I would prefer less ice-detail instead of more, at least in this kind of light. I enjoy the complimentary greens on the ice, but otherwise must rid the ice of detail. It's a dream-picture after all. Must go back to the drawing board!

To me, this is a little closer to what I was after, although not quite right. Will welcome ideas.

Oh yes, birdfriends; "onward and upward" is the only way
