    Default 7D Mk1 with 100_400 Mk2

Does anybody have experience of the old body with the new lens? It seems almost obligatory to have both the new body and lens together. I am not able to afford both but would think that the best option would be to go for new glass if I can get a decent trade in for my Mk 1 lens. I would be interested to hear from anybody using the new lens old body combination.

Any improvement in IS performance and IQ will be observed with either body. I own both the 7D MkI and MkII and the gains in the body mainly related to improved AF accuracy and consistency, which you'll not experience until you upgrade your body. You will also notice a significant improvement high-ISO performance.

Assuming that you don't already own a lens comparable to the 100-400mm Series II, then I'd make that next on your upgrade path, assuming that you want to shoot birds and wildlife. The 100-400mm is a wonderful lens for starting photography in those areas. Until you get that or a closely equivalent lens, you're pretty much shut out of that type of shooting. So, get the lens first, then upgrade your body when you can.

Hello David. Thank you for the reply. I am sorry that I have not made myself understood. I already own and use the 7D and 100-400 Mk1. I am only able to upgrade one of these at the moment and am inclined towards the lens. I am interested to know how much improvement I can expect with the new lens on the 7D Mk1.

You will have a better IS system and improved resolution especially in the corners and at 400mm along with much better build quality. All of these are independent of the camera body the lens is attached to

Sorry, that's what I thought I answered. Get the lens first, upgrade the body later. There's no need to do both at once.
