    Default Hummingbird

Fujifilm S5, Nikon macro 105 f2.8 VR, ISO 100, f4 and 1/1000, natural light in one afternoon, hand-held and focused manually.

I have never photographed any hummingbird before until a few weeks ago. I think this photos belongs to this forum more and so I'm just reposting it here.

    Thanks for looking !

Desmond this is an amazing image !!! Manual homers in flight are not your typical image !!! About the only thing I wish for here is tha you had a good sun angle. As presented would try working on the head area to lessen the brightness on one side and lighten the other. Would be fine some difference since it gives a dramatic look to the image

I like the bird's position and sharpness in the eye. Bg is very appealing and do like the wing blur very much !!! I like it a lot !!!!!

As Nonda said, "pretty flat out cool." Hummers are one of my major subjects right now, and I'm most interested in how you set up this shot.
    Thanks

Great capture of this little bird. Love the wing action here.
    Congrats,

Guys: thanks for the comments !

Gail: As far as the setup is concerned, well, it was simply walking up to where the hummingbirds were (there were more than one that day) and hoped for the best :) Yeah, there was a feeder close-by but it wasn't mine and I didn't hang it there.

Really. That was what I did. No flash, hand-held, manual exposure...hmmm...or aperture priority??....not sure now, set the focus manually the old fashion way, and one shot at a time. It was a sunny, late afternoon and so, with a f2.8 lens, I could use ISO 100 and still got a shutter speed of 1/8000. With a large aperture plus the fact that I was only a few feet away from the birds, the DOF is very shallow as you can see. But it also results in a blurred background of colors. Apparently, 1/1000 sec is still not fast enough to freeze the wings movement.

I have attached another photo of another hummingbird I got. Photographed on different days, but same location, same camera, same lens, hand-held and natural light only. This time, it's ISO 800 and a shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. Not much to say about the composition, lighting, etc., of this one, but just think it's different from most hummingbird photos that I usually see.
