I know this still has some softness about the head but I think it's an improvement in position and eye contact. I tried Sandy's yellow tip and it worked. Greens are gone.
    Nikon D7000 1/1600. F9. Iso 800 300mm. still a cloudy snowy day.

Well captured; I love these beautiful birds. Good eye contact. I can also see a version with a little off the bottom. Increased contrast on the bird might bring out the nice blue color.

Still a little soft but nice context. Are you hand holding? A brighter day should allow more shutter speed and maybe better AF. You might be able to increase contrast a little. Have you compared several shots of the same situation to see if some are sharper than others? I don't know your equipment but I'd think you should be able to get sharper shots. Factors are camera and/or subject movement (SS) and focus accuracy. Is there a filter on the lens? Their main function is to soften pictures (and to make money for camera shops). Is the lens clean -- both front and back elements? Is the lens hood on to protect from glare?

If the bird was giving you a little movement, it would have been nice to capture it with the head a little higher so the back isn't tangent to the branch, but that may not have happened. I'd only do a partial removal of the yellows for a more natural look. Do a Hue-Sat adjustment layer, not an adjustment on a pixel layer, and you have the flexibility to tweak the amount after the fact.

Yes, I was hand holding. And he does move a lot. Those birds are skittish. I was using continual shots so I'll check those. I'll also do a huesat adult layer (may not post) to pt some of the yellows back in to see about levels of "natural."
Thanks for comments. I'll keep working on it.
