I had a ton of fun photographing a bunch of cardinals that were inexplicably "tame", until I realized 10 minutes later that no further than 30 feet behind them a Barred Owl was intently watching (which I posted a few days ago). The inexplicable was now explained as they were likely limiting their movements due to it. At one point there must have been 15 of them in a small tree, which is a way higher number of them I've ever seen at one time. It was a fun and productive morning!
Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/160s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light (gotta love fill-light from below due to the snow!), handheld with lens and left shoulder/arm braced on a tree for additional stability, 80% FF, a few bolder snowflakes removed, eye work (darkened pupil), NR to the BG.
Barred Owl or this? Would be very happy to get a picture of this in the snow, find it very hard to be critical of such a fine shot but would love to see it without the twig through the tail ,that is been very picky, the snow flakes on that soft looking plumage makes this for me,excellent.
Exposure and color are perfect here Daniel, the palette of reds are superb and masterfully captured and processed. Detail and HA are also terrific, love the falling snow and the flakes on his face and breast so cool. My only suggestion is to crop a bit off the top to move the bird higher in your composition. Lovely image that a like a LOT, excellent work.
