    Default Black bear thinking

Taken in the fall of 2013 on Vancouver Island when the salmon run up the creeks. Canon EOS Rebel XI. Canon EF 70-200 mm lens, F16, 1/400, 200mm, ISO 1600. Some sharpening, tone mapping and noise reduction in RAW (DPP). Other post processing using Photoplus X7 and Topaz plugins. Low light conditions.

Would like comments on cropping and image quality of the bear's fur.

Hi Steve - Welcome to the Wildlife Forum. It is always nice to see a bear image posted and I like the inclusion of the water with leaves floating. Is this the full frame image or have you already cropped it? It might help us to be able to make suggestions if you post the straight out of camera image. As processed, I would prefer a bit more room particularly below for the virtual legs. The fur looks a little light. I know black bears actually come in many colors but in my experience the ones that are actually black are darker. Here the head looks especially light but you were there. There's still some noise in the image and my guess is that shooting at ISO 1600 is pushing the limits of a Rebel. If you did lighten the image then that would also increase the noise, especially in the darker areas. I hope you have more bear and other wildlife images to share.

By the way, it would be great if you would give us your thoughts on other people's images. We recommend commenting on at least 3-5 other wildlife images each time you post one of your own. It fosters a sense of community and also is the best way for us all to learn from each other and get the most out of BPN.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Steve - I should have also mentioned that your image does not have an embedded color profile so that there may be a shift in color depending on the browser people are using. It's always best to embed a sRGB profile when posting on the web.

Hi Steve. Rachel provided you with some thorough feedback which echoes my immediate sentiments when I viewed this image.
A big welcome from my side as well. Please do post the undedited SOOC image and perhaps we can provide some processing guidance on that?
