This is a close up portrait of a female leopard where I shot wide open to focus on those lovely eyes. the tongue & those canines showing was captured in a short burst with the 7D continuous shooting. The tongue is a bit OOF but I liked the clarity & sharpness of those squinty eyes. Sorry, the title should be Ms. Squint eyes!!!

Hi Sanjeev, I'm a little puzzled, the top of the head has sharpness, likewise the whiskers/chin, but the nose & tongue are soft, masking perhaps???? I personally might have gone for a bit more DoF, but using the 7D may not have been an option, so as she seemed quite relaxed swopping to the 5D & adding a 1.4 may have offered a better option? Unless you cropped to avoid small branches on the RHS, I think having a bit more space and perhaps going say 10x8 maybe another option?

    Cheers
    Steve

Hi Steve. I did not use any masking. Only USM to the face. I was already at 800 ISO so did not push it further. Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Hi Sanjeev i like the tightness of this frame and the eyes !!
Nice comp and overall tonality does look good . The OOF nose/bridge of nose and the tongue are a bit unfortunate , but nothing you can do afterwards , just next time close the aperture . IQ in this case does look good , how about the color of the tongue ?

Hi Andreas. Thanks for your kind words. I will try to stopo down in future in such situations :-) I am deciding on buying the 7D II and that should help me to use higher ISOs when needed. I have read a lot about the new 5Ds and those 50mps look interesting & the crop modes on them. BUt the 5 FPS is a tad slow I guess for wildlife.

Sanjeev i guess for a resting Leopard the 5fps would be more than enough and for a lot of other stuff too. I think only the low Iso capability will be somehow limiting us . Sanjeev i do the same stuff with the stopping down ..........all the time .

    Cheers Andreas

OK Sanjeev, one guy I know is just heading out to Japan, but I'll drop Brendon a line, if you drop me your dates for Chobe it maybe he will be there and if he has room you could perhaps tag in as he leads groups, but I have no idea. Will do my best.

Hi Sanjeev. Sadly my preference would also have been for the muzzle and tongue to also be in focus. I would easily push the 7D to ISO-1600 in given situations, and this is one of them
Just replied to your email - apologies, pretty swamped by work at the moment

Hi Sanjeev - I too wish for more dof and sharpness of nose and tongue. So long as you expose properly, no problem with the 7D and ISO 1600. This is one where I like the square comp.

    TFS,
    Rachel
