    Default Male Kingfisher

I got a bit addicted to photographing the UKs most colourful bird this last year spending ages at certain perches waiting for their fleeting visits. This one however just dropped in unexpectedly. The light was good but it was so close that I even managed a head and shoulders portrait shot. Normally these birds are very skittish but for some reason this one was happy to feed in front of me. Sadly I was well above it in a hide so no decent flight or splashdown shots, but I quite liked this perched image though I think I may have over sharpened it a tad.

    Taken with a 7D, 100-400@400mm, 1/640th, ISO 250, f6.3.

Hi Phil, thats a great sighting - any KF close up is a bonus. Great look back pose, and the colours are well exposed. The lighter blue parts of the plumage seem on the edge of oversharpening, but the rest of the KF looks good. Comp wise, I can see some space add below, and a bit more on top too. A vertical wouldnt be out of place either, if you have space below.

Phil I agree with Stuart re the composition, look back pose and exposure of the bird looks spot on.

Gorgeous shot love the exposure and details,I can see why you went for this crop but I think you have some good suggestions to consider.

Thanks all for the comments and sorry I didn't get back sooner (ran out of posts). I've been playing with a few crops and settled on a vertical one as it seemed to work well.
