Default Big Horn Ram with 7DII and 100-400 II

I am in Yellowstone N.P. with Dale Franz this week and today was our first day in the park. I know a few people are waiting to see how I like my new toys in the field. We found some big horn sheep rams up on the rocks with some snow in nice light. This one posed nicely at the top of the rock face. So far so good with the 7DII and 100-400 II combination.

    Canon 7DII
    100-400 II @ 400mm
    1/3200
    f7.1
    ISO 400
HH, very slight crop to remove a sliver of rock in upper right corner, luminosity mask, levels, curves, selective burning, sharpened in CCPS.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Hi Rachel. This looks very good. Excellent colours, contrast and sharpness. Comp is beautiful too. TFS. Look forward to more.

    Hi Rachel,

    wish you lots of fun.
It looks very nice, as well like the comp. Somehow I get the feeling the Big Horn has a tad red cast! Maybe just me
Details look good and I am curious what you have to say about the 100-400mmII

Have fun out in the field

    Ciao Anette

Nicely composed. I like how the ram is set off nicely against the snow BG. Nice details on the subject and well exposed on the snow too.

That bare rock showing just above the rams back is a bit unfortunate but thats nature for you!

Hi Rachel, can't comment too much on the IQ etc as I'm away & using the laptop, so will leave it with others. Nice detail & tone in the snow, just wondered if moving to the left a bit more, it may have added a bit more snow alone the back of the Ram and to add a hint more separation, if possible? Dropping the ISO to perhaps 200 may have been an option based on the SS as the subject as you said, enjoyed posing?

Hope you are having fun, say hi to Dale for me.

    TFS
    Steve

Hi Rachel hope you are having fun in Yellowstone and you will see your wolves .
Nicely composed ram with good detail in the snow , which i like .
For me the contrast is a wee bit heavy in between shadows and mid tones , but that could be just me . I would also temper the reds a tad . IQ does look good and very fine detail are showing up !! Hope you are happy with this combo !!

    Hello Rachel

Hope you are having fun in Yellowstone, wishing you lots of sightings and happy moments!

Thank you so much for sharing your first sightings with us! Don't know how you manage PP work after a day in the field but it is wonderful to see you are enjoying your new toys and yes, the light was in your favour and the subject posing nicely for you! Comp and presentation work for me as well as the colours and sharpness, I would try lighten up the shadows in places (underside and left hind leg) but I presume you are working on a laptop and surely you will revisit those images once you get home Lovely sighting well captured, looking forward to more images from this trip and once again wishing you a fabulous time

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Clarity, contrast and sharpness look good at this size from your new combo, Rachel
I agree with Steve, my first thought was having him more "within" the band of snow...
Enjoy the trip and give my best to Dale.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and suggestions, much appreciated as always. Part of the reason for the high ss was that he and another ram were moving along the rocks just before this pose but yes, I could have dropped the ISO and ss.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel
