Another one from my NYC trip, this was high on my list of birds to see and photograph. Most of the birds seem very wary and don't pose for long in suitable positions. Managed a few, this is one of them.
Couple of blurred twigs removed to clean up perch. Sharpening to whole bird and selective to head- focus point more on the shoulder. Have then cleaned up the edges of the beak with clone tool on high magnification( a la Adrian Dancy tip) to make it appear sharper.

Was really surprised at the amount of birds in the park from Warblers to Hawks, did well to get away from the shops presuming you had female company.

    Cheers Keith.

Great image, Ivan. Skittish birds, but you have a nice detailed capture here. Beautiful light and IQ.

In the words of the old bard 'nice work' Ivan.

I've always been a sucker for the red carpet over the shoulder look.

I have about 5 of these at a time on my peanut feeder and I would love to capture something this nice! They dive bomb in, grab a peanut and blast off, I'm going to have to set up a perch nearby to try and capture the ones waiting to jump on the feeder!

Warren a bit of patience will pay off. I got lucky with the short time I had available in central park.

I like the topside view and the colors, look back pose is nice too, critical focus was on the back as opposed to the head

I think you picked the best compromise for the focus spot- even if it is the birds back.
Focussing on the head would have left a lot more of the bird soft

Cheers John, more luck than planning. They are fairly quick and don't stop still for long. I Had to grab and shoot so to speak, believe me I have a lot of dumped shots from the time I had to spend in the park. With time and planning I could have got a lot more usable shots.

putting the focus point on the wrong spot is not a good approach. I think at f/5.6 he would have had enough DOF to get the head and most of the bird sharp.

Don'tknow how near the bird was but its on an angle
At 400mm @f5.6 you have 2 inches DOF- so not a lot to play with.
