Hi Sanjeev, I seem to think that India also has a very similar bird? At the bottom end of Africa, our local Black-wing Stilts have somewhat darker red coloured legs....

Being really picky now... The whites are a little blown out and could be reduced to give more feather detail...

If you wait long enough, these birds do walk around a lot, and it is usually quite easy to anticipate when they will start to move...

Another characteristic is that they stick their tails almost vertically in the air when going for a bug in the mud, poke around a little, then withdraw quite quickly...

As he leans into his next step, or dips his head, try taking multiple frames ( 10 fps ) per sec, and try getting a shutter speed to no less than 1/2,500th sec or more.... Give yourself as much chance as possible by trying auto ISO....* The reflections would suggest that it was nice and bright and you could have got a nice high SS.

One or more of those will surely freeze that moment of flying droplettes and a bare foot out of the water or a worm wriggling in his bill with water droplettes being flung around...

This pose is typical of most waders, but with no feet being visible, gives the image the feeling of emptiness.....

On the other hand, one foot out of the water with drops of water flying around or a victorious head thrown back with a worm in his bill and droplettes of water flying around would have really pumped this image up nicely..

Please accept this in the constructive spirit in which it was intended.

These guys have amazingly long legs. Nice pose showing the attractive eye.

Thanks for the thorough critique and behaviour tips Tim, that is what we are all about! The whites do seem OK at this end, but I agree with your other points.

Sanjeev, nice details, and I like the open bill. Artistically I do find that there is a bit much FG as posted...cropping away about half that FG (and then both sides to retain the ratio) would be good if the IQ can hold up. Beautiful species that I always enjoy viewing.

Hi Sanjeev, Daniel summed up my main thought re comp, but not sure about the IQ???? I think once you get some new kit you'll be flying high for sure. I did warn you about needing 'deep' pockets.

Great walking pose. One often sees shots of these guys with the legs partially in the water; this one really shows how long they are. Whites look OK on my screen. My only critique is to take quite a bit off the bottom.

Excellent shot, Sanjeev! I like the pose, open beak, exposure and the HA. Agree about cropping off the bottom of the frame.
