    Default Harlequin Duck

    Attached Images Attached Images

Back to Barnegat Light yesterday in hopes, amongst others, of finding reported Common Redpolls. We did see our winter friends, the Harlequin Ducks, also a loan Greater Scaup. As we navigated over the jetty rocks a number of Harlequins gave us a display diving next to the Mussel encrusted rocks.. Harlequin Ducks are carnivores eating mollusks, crustaceans, and insects. Still amazing to me are the colors and designs of these beauties. C&C welcome

Hi Geoffrey, nice image of a lovely duck. I'd wish for the duck to turn a little bit towards you and more space all around. Loi

I really like the image you've produced here, and I imagine it was quite a bit of work to get an image this good in your not so easy location! Loving the colors and the light. The color palette is pleasing. If you have a tad more room on top and right I might try it as an option.

Love these guys. Very nice upright pose; the HA looks just fine to me. I only wish for a little more room at top. I'm wondering if a point or two of black to the mid-tones on the bird would help give it some pop? Nice Barnegat BG.

Thank you Marina. I wanted respond to the, "not so easy location". The rule of thumb is don't try to watch the bird activity and navigate the jetty rocks at the same time. The crevasses between the rocks need constant attention, while getting a footing, especially when setting up one's tripod. Although in this instance I was able to place my tripod, legs fully retracted, near the back edge of a boulder with a nice ledge on the adjacent rock for left foot, and able to kneel on yet another. Bit precarious, but once settled had a perfect clear view of sloping Mussel encrusted rock as the Harlequins jumped from the ocean.

To answer the cropping situation, it's approximately 85% of FF and no more room at the top of frame.

Superb shot with a lot of feather details. I like the pose, exposure, details and composition. TFS
