Over the last 8 months I've spent more time culling images from the hard drive than going out and getting new stuff. I reworked this older one during a break from my purges. This youngster was trying to keep up with some others as they made their way over the rocks. The landing point was just out of frame but I liked the backdrop more and the landing was covered with bright, OOF snow so I cropped and cloned it out of the image. 40D, 1-400L, f6.3, 1/1600, ISO 200, HH, small crop from top and left (as viewed), cloned out small bit of snow from bottom of image, PP'd in DPP and PSE10.
Hi Steve very nice image from IQ POV with that kit . Great timing and i like the comp with some space to jump into for the subject . Nice tone and color with good detail and you handled the light situation very well !!! Why are the rocks that light in the "shadowed" areas ? By looking at the sun angle i would expect slightly darker shadows !! ??
Nice capture. Looks like it is just jumping off into space. You managed the dynamic range well. The shadows do not appear muddy and the highlights are not blown out. Detail on the subject is good. It is an eye catcher image. Wise choice to clone out the snow at the bottom. I'm fine with the OOF snow in the background.
Fabulous timing on capturing this! Lovely sharp details on the goat and rocks. I like the subtle curves in blues & grays in the bkgd. They provide a high altitude context, and the dark blue curve just under the feet visually supports the downward jump of the goat.

I really like this !! , TFS Andreas
Thanks for the look and comment Andreas. I did increase the shadow a tiny bit I also looked at the RAW again. I think that most of the lightening of the shadow is from the reflection of the snow that was on the ground. Also, the time was 1/800 not 1/1600 as noted on my original post. I've included an unprocessed crop of the original RAW as a reference.
I think this is great. Talk about a leap of faith. It looks like its jumping off the edge of a cliff. I really like the BG and the OOF slopes of the hills. Lovely image! I like it a lot!
Hi Steve, these guys really are 'Mountaineers' and I like the fact you captured this in mid jump, adds interest. I like the overall colours and light, but based on what you said, I might have kept the rocks on the LHS as is just for a hint more depth to the image. Hope you get another chance this year with the 5D.
This is a real cracker, Steve! One of the best I've seen from you...
I agree with Andreas re the shadows and may prefer the processed image shadows to have the same darkness/contrast as your RAW screenshot.
