I took this at Chicago Botanic Garden. This guy was not about to move out of his tree, but he let me get very close. The shot is almost FF. Should I attempt to clean up the bg, or leave as is?

You can try blurring it a bit more, increase the lightness (this could help reducing the darkness of that "big black leaf")/weaken the contrast, and de-saturate the colors of the background to your taste. Cloning out the distracting elements is always another valid option.
Hope this help.

Hey Sid,
I like your composition...:) My suggestion on this one would be to crop just a tad from the top and to clone out the diagonal black flange from the left of the frame...The details on the black feathers are good...:D
Hi Sid Great suggestions !!! I would definetley crop some form the top and get rid of the dark line. Would also try suggestions by Desmond a different and effective approach.
The bg does not bother that much. The lower right foreground is the most distracting. Also remember when framing to leave more room in front than on back of the bird !!!! Did well with the exposure, good head angle and very sharp !!! If they are displaying try to time it and catch the shoulders forward !!!
