One day was assigned by me to hang out at a waterhole for more than a few hours. Except falling asleep I got this giraffe
Na, did not fall asleep, but I know Andreas has some input on that
While sitting in my beloved 4x4 watching the giraffes coming slowly to the waterhole my jeep started shaking quite a bit much, never turned so fast my head to see which big animal wants to step inside. Well, it was this whirly windy wind and very big and me in the middle. Window did not close that fast as I wished, like whoosh.
The dust whirly went over to to the Giraffe, she/he was going mad, but till this #@$%&%$#@ window was down again he/she looked at me again, no jump up from the ground anymore
LR the usual stuff, pulled into PS applied level and midtones and a few little adjustments. Sharpened in PS, saved finally with the right settings. No one realised that the ellie was not quite proper color profile assigned!
1DX
f/5.6 shame on me, actually no idea from where that comes from!
1/4000 more of that stuff, geeeez!
ISO 400
70-200mm II & 2x III set to 360mm
Well, love your story! but don't know enough about editing to make any sensible suggestions; just glad you got this shot!! love the dust and the expression on his face!!
Anette - I think he's saying to you "I have to be out here, what's your excuse?" I like the position of the giraffe in the frame with it looking back to the left. I also think you handled the dust and the subtle colors very well. Overall, nicely done.
Nice one Anette! Nice story and a soft feel enforced by the dust. Classic look coming from this giant almost as if he's wondering what the heck this crazy person is doing out there in the dust!
the previous user, I guess that was me too. I blame it on the car seat. I swopped cameras for this and the wheel for the f was for 300% sure dialled in from the car seat But hey it looks good
Andreas is my car I am sure we would chat our heads off instead of taking pix and than we would battle who is driving, we both are Germans OMG
Well this is a real competitor for my recent bull dust postings from KTP . Nicely done Anette, but the copy never as good as the original .
I really like the typical Etosha colors and harsh light you handled that very good . Nice balance of the available tones .
But ........ now me is coming into play , if this would be mine i would try to lower the contrast in the giraffe , i feel with the 1 Dx you could get more fine detail out the subject and in this case you made the detail a little coarse . I could be wrong , just an initial feeling . But this is a minor thing .
Regarding your nice talk with Mr . Detail , i had a loud giggle following you guys , i seem to be such a nice and important guy that you talk about me when i am no there ............. Well i wear grey socks 90 % of the time , just in case i need a grey card , tear off the sock and throw it close to the subject . When finished shooting chase the subjects away with my car and drive up to the sock and pick it up again , this is how i get all my shots perfectly white balanced , any more questions ????!!
Anette we could drive in a 4x4 , i am experienced , well somehow at least i went through Namib Naukluft on my own and once from KTP to Mabuasehube which is not a nice track for a rookie , but i made it , with Steve you would get stuck quickly , he is just used to low BMW and tarred roads . And a driver of course .
It could be that we would chat a lot and miss some action from time to time , but i would not fall asleep like i did on several trips when i stayed out the whole day and waiting at a waterhole for something to happen . This time i was sitting in Carlīs landie in Zuka GR watching Cheetah some hundred meters away , after a while i started to become tired , Carl was talking and i felt asleep , what a disaster !!!
Anette invite me for your next trip and i will drive you all over the place , but you know the driver is the boss and picks the right place and angle , just feel free and give me a call . Or we should go together with Andre and Gabriela , i really bet we will be kicked out from camp due to the noise from the loud laughs we have , trust me it would be great fun with a lot of leg pulling involved .
LOL, nice to have some banter occasionally and good to kick back Andreas.
Again, before this goes way off, I might get stuck, but then again, I might not, who knows, but I prefer to have a Guide/tracker so all I need to do is get into position and shoot, the rest is down to them. Let me know when you guys are going, I can then avoid the noise level and as the wildlife will just run to me.
Seriously lets take this up off air now guys and talk behind the scenes.
I'm just going to chime in to this discussion. First, as you know I'm with Steve on the car and guide thing but so long as I still have my seat/row, you can all come. Second, I learned somewhat quickly that silence at sightings is necessary because Alison is filming. Talking is ok while driving but not while filming.
Enjoyed viewing your image as well as reading the comments:)
Well framed and processed, I like the inclusion of the environment and those colours are superb, very tempted to suggest a photographic trip together but I take it we should plan this "behind the scenes" as suggested above...Although I must add that camping is compulsory...and good food...and wine:)
Love how it pops from the dust, Anette, and I chuckled at your story about the window not working along with you, we've all had those moments when self-driving.
Now imagine Steve and co, I am driving, with wife and kids in the car, with limited space for gear to be at the ready because their toys and blankets and stuff take up the space - and all the while I am trying to make some decent shots
I really like that, Anette. I always prefer some interesting clouds in the sky instead of a "tourist sky" so the dust made up for that quite nicely i think. I spent last week travelling through various national parks in the Karoo and the hot wind seemed to follow me wherever I went so i can relate - family wanted windows down and aircon but that of course doesn't make for good photography.
