Taken In Barrow, Alaska last summer
Canon 1DX
F 600mm and 1.4X
ISO 800 SS 1/2000 f 7.1
Small crop 80% FF, RAW conversion in DPP but this time I didn't reduce the luminance and set chrominance at 2.
Cloned out a black spot in the water to right of bird.
Comments and critiques always learned from and appreciated with thanks,
Gail
Gail, lovely light and a nice subject. I like the framing as presented, the only thing that would have been nicer would be a catchlight in the eye for a bit more pop, but I can hardly blame you for that!
I would also add a catchlight....
One of the most attractive birds, IMO, in breeding and non breeding color.
The Red tundra and blue go well together...
The IQ of this image is wonderful, Gail. Having not seen this bird before, but while in Iceland I photographed a Red-necked Phalarope. With your knowledge of birds my guess is it's a typo. This is a beautiful Red Phalarope with a very nice complimentary BG.
nice image of a beautiful bird. I tend to carefully add a catchlight sometimes but it doesn't always "work". Great BG and gaze of the bird. Would like to see this bird soon!
Gorgeous light, detail and color! Love the low POV and soft BG. I think I'd love to see a little more at the bottom if you have it, or lighten about the bottom 1/3 of the reflection..
Ooh love that quality! The pose and colours are superb. My only criticism is the the bird appears very central in the frame (i.e. North South not East West).
Another beauty from your Barrow trip, Gail. I'm not sure I would do anything to it: the bird and bg are wonderful just as presented. That said, I could imagine an alternate crop taking just a bit off the bottom, to just above your name; and a slight enhancement of the tiny catchlight that already exists. Or not. Someday maybe I'll see one of these beauties in their breeding plumage.
Hi Gail, love the low angle of capture here, and the the overall colours are simply stunning. The circular ripples around the Phalarope takes this up a notch.
Thank you all for your helpful feedback.
I want to say thank you to Geoffrey for spotting my mistake. It is indeed a red phalarope! If a mod happens to stumble upon this post please correct the title for me.
Interesting to see the different viewpoints on composition. Randy, Stuart and Bill suggested a bit off the bottom and Diane wanted more room on the bottom. I do agree with Jonathan that the bird is centered in a vertical direction so in the repost I enhanced the very faint catchlight that was already there ( only Bill noticed it) and took some off the bottom. I do have more room up top so I could have included more of the pretty grasses instead.
Again thank you all for your help,
Gail
The re-post looks great with the added catch. I love these little birds. They are fun to watch feeding in their spinning manor. Never seen a red one, very beautiful. Nice look down pose and a cool looking varied BG. Techs look great, especially on the re-post. Another nice keeper from Alaska Gail!
