Nothing fancy here but was excited to finally get out and shoot after what seemed like an eternity of lousy weather and high water levels. I am hoping to return soon and capture this species mating, since there is a lot of posturing going on.

Thank you for looking. Comments and critiques are always welcomed and much appreciated.

I like the low angle, raised muddy foot, light, HA, exposure, composition and BG colour. Up here I see them mainly around the roads edge or in a farmers field. If mine I would consider toning down the blue line leading to the breast area. Very well done Marina.

Great pose in the mud that these guys seem to like so well. Well exposed, in nice light, making the bird stand out well against the BG. Good low POV. Slight halo at the breast.

Like the raised foot, low angle, and sharpness. Happy to see that you're out shooting again!

Marina that does not look good to paddle in but looks like the bird likes it, nice angle and the bird looks very sharp ,that eye really pulls you into the picture, very well caught.

Grand shot Marina. Beautiful colour too. I agree the blue lines are a tiny bit distracting. May have been better if ey had been on both sides. No big deal.
PS Good to see one of your pics in one of our national daily newspapers.Well done.

Wonderful light! Those muddy feet adds a lot to the scene in the image. Well done.

Well captured Marina. And using a 2x tele... very nice 1000mm of reach! I like everything about this image, but what really takes the cake is the muddy foot pose.

I am noticing something strange in your processing, or maybe it's just the background color causing the affect. The bird looks like it's pasted onto the background, rather than looking like it's part of the background.... does that make sense? I normally don't make much sense..... It could be a combination of things like sharpening, the 1000mm focus reach, but something is making the image flat. Can't quite put my finger on it.

These little birds are my nemesis. They know the exact distance to stay away, just out of reach of my modest camera lens

    Hi Moe:

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. These birds are also my nemesis bird (along with the kingfisher). I actually did nothing to the BG at all except one round of NR. Almost no post processing to this image. I am looking forward to going back to this location soon.

Beautiful little bird, and great timing with the walk. Great light as well.

Not knowing this species, at first I thought the image was just a little dark, but as nobody else has picked up on it I'll go with the presented version as being correct.

Nice evening light and pretty pose with the foot up.
I could see a version with the bird a bit brighter,

Terrific light and pose and I like the dark look to it.
Maybe a sliver off the bottom and off the right side behind the bird....

Believe it or not, John, that is the name of this bird and I have no idea why. Maybe I need to research that just for fun.
