These birds are endangered so it was a treat to see a family with a juvenile. Every time I look at this image I think of the shot I missed...
We watched these birds for about 15 minutes and started to move away in the jeep. We were about 300 yards away from the birds when I saw this adult bend down and grab a black mamba snake. I yelled to our guide to turn around and go back to the birds. In the 2 or 3 minutes it took to turn the jeep around and speed back to the birds, I watched this bird with a large snake wriggling in his bill, walk into the deep bush with no opportunity for a shot. I could cry...(and the sun had decided to pop out as all this unfolded over about 3 minutes.)

Males have pink in the pouch and girls are all red.
Figures right! That kinda stuff happens to me all the time. So much so that me and my friends kid about it all the time. I can be sitting on a bird or spot for a half hour with nothing going on, then soon as I decide to leave, I see something great happen in my rear view mirror. What the heck. Kinda like the joke amongst us also is if you want something great to happen, start chimping It's a guarantee! The shot looks great and the exposure and details are all there. Congrats on getting this endangered species, but a Black Mamba, OMG!!

Excellent image Gail! I like the exposure control, details in the blacks, sharpness, setting and composition. Even though you have no image of the snake and hornbill you will never forget it in your mind.
Gail you must be pleased with what you have got, the bird is full of detail and sharp, frustrating bit with the Snake but that's all part of life's rich pattern I'm afraid, would be very pleased if it was mine.
