I went to bed early on New Year's Eve in anticipation of waking early on New Year's Day to go photograph this wonderful Snowy Owl with some friends. As my partying days are long gone I'd now have it no other way than this!

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1600s., f/4, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld, cropped for comp, cloned out small bit of tail showing below the belly, deepened the blacks for more "pop", NR to the BG. Bait used.

    Daniel:

The framing on this is strong, with the diagonals of the wings. Intense gaze, soft background

Did you clip the wings on the original at all, or just really liked this comp (which is again, very good, striking even)

    Cheers

I smiled reading your comments regarding partying on New Years... so have my days of partying been long gone. Striking image... I could see even a tighter crop showing less of the wings and the face larger.

I like the framing also Daniel. What a stare you have here. The background works well, nice to see something different.

Thanks guys! Bill, no snow as of this morning...but a snowstorm has now since blanketed everything in white. Randy, yes, both wings were clipped...but I was expecting that with the 500mm as I was deliberately going for some tighter incoming close ups. Here is what the raw converted to tif file looks like before any PS work is done to it.

Love the penetrating stare. The mild December in Ontario has provided opportunities to vary from the standard "white-on-white" Snowy images.

I would go in tighter since you clipped anyway.
Intense stare and it could easily be tighter without losing IQ.
