Over the past month or so I've had the opportunity to shoot some ducks in a local pond with Doug Brown. The opportunities have been great (including three lifers: Redhead, Common Loon, and Canvasback ... images to come).

I didn't pay much attention to the Wigeons at first (they are pretty common), but I couldn't resist this one calling.

Stunning wigeon portrait, Miguel! Love the light and the calling pose. Your low shooting angle really added a lot to the image.

    Miguel:

It is a lovely capture, handsome duck, well done. Could see a version with the bg toned down a bit. Ran multiply layer on the bg to soften it a bit. Personal taste.

It is so ironic about what is common in one place is rare another. I see lots of loons, canvas backs and redheads, but rarely a widgeon, so I would be excited to image the widgeon. You are the reverse!

    Cheers

    Randy

Terrific everywhere, your image makes the widgeon extraordinary! I really like the low POV and detail against the soft surrounds... Could someone share how to tone the bg down as Randy did above? Another forum perhaps? Thanks, Happy New Year.

What a sweet Widgeon image, Miguel. Silky fg/bg, great detail, super low POV, and the open bill all combine beautifully. I prefer the OP, or maybe somewhere in between, but any way you slice it, it's a great capture.

Great shot Miguel with all the colors showing nicely on the duck. The low angle puts it over the top.

Congratulations on the lifers! You have a wonderful capture of this Wigeon and calling pose is icing on the cake. Like the quality of light and super low angel too.

Cracker of an image of this species...love the low angle work, image quality, and especially the subject animation. My initial reaction was the same as Randy's...the OP was looking just slightly washed out...his repost richened the image up nicely.

I also prefer the op...that zoo building really adds to the water color. Really sweet image and open bill, calling pose is super! Sharon

Randy, I'm a fan of what you did to the background. I'll give it a shot and try out different opacity settings on that multiply later. Thanks for taking the time to work on it a bit!

thanks Sharon! This isn't taken at the zoo, so the background isn't the building (although I know which one you are referring to)
