I shot this moose the same morning as the previous post. This young one was around the back of a logging road just about to exit the woods when we saw it. We pulled onto the logging road in a small red rental car just off the road and waited for a few minutes. We were about 100 yards from the moose but as soon as it noticed the car, the moose made a beeline for us. It seemed to want a companion to play with. I shot through the window as it got closer. This is full frame with a sliver extra extra added on top as I almost cut off the tip of an ear. This was right at daylight so I didn't have much light to work with. Right after shooting this I had to move the car out of its path, because I thought it might want to continue down the road to cross the highway. However, the moose just came up, looked at us for a while, and started drinking some water out of a puddle. It never showed any signs of distress and eventually eased back into the woods. We stayed for a while to make sure it wasn't about to cross the hwy. in front of any traffic, but thankfully it went away from the hwy.

    Techs:
    D3S
    500mm f4 AF-S II
    500mm
    ISO 4000
    f/6.3
    1/400

My techs could have been better here. It had just walked out of a shaft of light, so I had exposure comp. set at -2/3 again. I had to bring up some shadows, but otherwise just sharpened the moose, NR on the BG, and cloned out a few flies. All C&C welcome.

Hi Lyle - you certainly had some great and up close sightings of moose. I like the inquisitive look here and the bokeh. I think the moose was so close that you needed a bit more dof to get the sharpness from the tip of the nose to the ears. If time permitted I might have shot both horizontal and vertical formats because I think vertical would have worked well too. There's still some blue in the blacks.

This shot reminds me of a sighting I had once in Denali, but for that, I had each hand on a couple of much too small trees. Fortunately, the female decided that I was not worth the effort to charge through the trees and stomp me and my wife, who was right behind me, so she walked away.

As to the color cast, you can frequently remove unwanted color casts with one click on the Auto button of Curves. In this case, Auto with Opacity at about 30% and a Color balance adjustment of +8 midtone Red to remove the slight cyan cast works well.

Thanks for the feedback. Douglas that worked really well. I had been just desaturating the blue channel by feel. I had actually reduced the blues on this shot of the moose by 2x as much as the previous post, but now that it's actually corrected, it looks much better. Yes, Rachel I have some vertical shots as well that I'll post in a day or 2. Thanks again for such substantive feedback. Here is the color corrected version.

Much improved. I usually avoid any Auto button, but frequently it is a good place to start.
