Another from a series of images taken with these two males feeding on a buffalo carcass taken down the previous night. Very privileged to have the sighting to ourselves purely down to the accessibility of the sighting, however the Ranger who will be nameless also I think, re wrote the manual on how steep land rovers can traverse, downhill. Light was still of a premium again, due to the location. Awesome does not do the encounter justice.

Subject: Two male Lions on Buffalo kill (Panthera leo)
    Location: SA
    Camera: Canon 1DX
    Lens:200-400f/4 HH
    Exposure: 1/500s at f/5.6 ISO3200
Original format: Landscape, very slight crop.

    Hi Steve,
It is fun to see how slight differences in position on the jeep changes this scene. ( I am referring to Rachel's previous post).
The male lion in the FG is stunning. Love the fur detail.
    Contrasting colors look great.
My only wish for this image was that you had been an inch higher to get the BG lions' eye completely clear of the carcass.
I would also be tempted to crop from the bottom to just above the line of print that says all rights reserved. That would get rid of some of the leg with the 3 bugs/parasites on it as well as some of the OOF grass.
Awesome sighting and thanks for sharing,
    Gail

Hi Steve - Definitely a great sighting but with many challenges to the images including the light and the foliage that was all over the place. Great detail and color. I think if you had gone higher to get the eye clear it would have ruined the great low pov of the fg lion. It was great to have so much time at the sighting (hours) so that we not only saw 4 different male lions eating, they were constantly moving around the kill and we were able to reposition the vehicle as well. It gave us lots of different opportunities for comps and perspectives.

    TFS,
    Rachel

This is a very intimate view. I can only imagine how incredible this sighting was--one day (hopefully). The foreground lion is great, but I also wish the carcass wasn't intersecting the eye of the lion in the BG. I like the OOF grass in the foreground.

Excellent shot that puts the viewer up close and personal with the life of a lion. Gory! But, well, gory.

Hi Steve , very well processed gore lion frame. Nicely framed with excellent color contrast and a very decent tonal range . I really love the carcass colors , very realistic looking .
Without having been there , i tell you afterwards , you should have moved left or right or up to avoid that intersecting eye /carcass . If not possible to move ........... well you should have moved Rachel and /or Alison , but you are a real british gentleman and took the intersection .

Superb...perfect colour and texture. I quite like the slightly OOF male in the BG and the eyes staring at potential intruders (Just my take). Nice one Steve!

Uuuuh raw meat Great image and details I never would expect different from you Steve
All said already, but would have gone a tad higher. I know you did this image just that we can comment on that green stuff on the bottom. The challenge for us to see….. or not

    Have a great eve

I quite like the whole image here and the oof male to me adds to the story telling aspect of the image. Well processed and an experience you will never forget it seems.

    Good evening Steve,

... it is truly a good evening for me tonight, been viewing the latest images on BPN Wildlife and enjoyed what I saw. Also enjoyed reading other members' comments and loved to see how some of us argue passionately and get deeply engaged with the images presented. Which is what BPN Wildlife is all about - Nature at its best and our interpretation of what we see, as well as our thoughts. My thoughts tonight? I am happy to be part of BPN Wildlife, and thankful for learning to share others' feeling of being a mere element in the great spectacle of Nature. While sharing is not an option when it comes to your beautiful lions, we all have something in common on BPN Wildlife: a love for Nature and the same strong desire to share our experiences. Thank you for sharing with us your idea of beauty as you saw it in Nature, I am so grateful for your help and really appreciate your input with regard to my images

Wishing you a Happy New Year in 2015,
    Gabriela Plesea

Thanks folks and in answer to some points raised here is my reply.

For me, it's the figure in the FG that is key, the intersecting bone/eye in the BKG lion is minor IMHO, plus you cannot second guess what the two will do, you just have to go with it, however I do have the eye clear in another frame, but I will not copy & past to make a composite image. I could not go higher without standing up, this is a big NO NO, plus I would get in the way of Rachel's shooting who was behind me on the LHS. Moving was also not an option, even though we were the only vehicle on site. These guys were nervous, there were other lions around and later a leopard who was thinking of chancing his arm joined us, plus the more they ate the lighter the carcass became and with both lions dragging it in different directions moving would just compound their skittishness and I won't add additional pressure, the subject comes first, NOT the image.

we all have something in common on BPN Wildlife: a love for Nature and the same strong desire to share our experiences.
Hi Gabriela, a very true, reflect full and visionary sentence, thank you, as alway the right words.

You are most welcome, now make 2015 your year, apologies for the recent absence, a culmination of Xmas and unexpectedly helping another three bods which I hope at least one will join BPN.

Wish you ALL a very Happy and inspiring 2015.

    Steve

PS Dumay, nice to see you back in 2014, posting and adding to the mix.
