    Default Pastel Hippo

I find it very hard to come up with an image that is "different"in the wildlife forum- especially when it comes to hippos.
I like this one because of the lovely colors in the BG and FG and my low POV. I held my camera over the boat to just above the water level( guide was not happy with me)
This hippo came very close to the boat. About 80% FF
    Canon 1DX 600mm II
    ISO 800 F 5.6
    SS 1/1000
Did very little in PP: crop, levels, DE at 2% on hippo and USM to JPEG
Comments and critiques always appreciated and learned from with thanks,
    Gail

Hmmm...now that I see this posted I think I should go with less on the bottom.

Hi Gail - Gorgeous colors in the bg and water. The low pov really makes this image and the wide open eyes. I would actually go the opposite way and crop about half of the space above to emphasize the low pov even more. Looking at a screen crop if you crop from the bottom I think you lose a bit of that feeling.

    Rachel

Gail, this is just phenomenal! Awesome low POV, great exposure and colours. Love those bulging eyes and nostrils! Very cool! TFS.

Your BG colors make this shot, Gail - absolutely beautiful and the subject as sharp as can be! I would have lowered exposure just a touch, but that's probably just me.

Hi Gail, awesome colours throughout, and I really like the detail on the Hippo. Great eye contact, and I agree with Rachel, taking a bit off the top wont harm.

Hi Gail , superb low POV with stunning DOF and very nice colors and detail . Really nice work .
I just might give the hippo some more tones , to me it looks a bit thin in the 1/2 and 3/4 tones .
A bit away from the top would not look too bad , i guess .

    Hi Gail,

great image of this one. Agree with Rachel on a crop. I might would choose 2:1 with this one. Than the Hippos even looks a Tad "down " on you :)

Hi Gail, love the environmental colours, nice blends with no distracting elements. The subject I find just a bit washed out/flat, with not much depth/tone to it, almost an even light across the board. Something like this really needs it to give weight & character, in doing so it helps to build 'form' into the subject, so I agree with Andreas. Utilising the light & darks you can the, what I refer to, as 'sculpting' the subject. If you were to crop I would personally loose above, not below.

I reworked the image by changing the crop as you suggested and worked on the hippo by playing with levels and curves. I also tried to reduce the amount of red in the hippo.
    Thanks for all the advice.

I like it, Gail. That's more or less what I've desired when asking you to lower the exposure just a tad.

Killer image, Gail, and the RP is even better. Your low shooting angle, amazing colors and of course the pose of your subject is what set this image apart.
