but this is without a doubt my best deer image to date :). Taken at Tejon Ranch, Southern California yesterday on a work trip to remove barbed wires on the ranch. Previously used for cattle ranching, Tejon Ranch is now the largest nature preserve in Southern California with over 200,000 acres. Access is still restricted, so the only way to get in is thru work volunteer or support the Tejon Ranch Conservancy.

Very nice, great light and the subject pops really nicely against the BG. Nice shooting angle. Overall a very nice image.

Hi Loi - I can see why you like this one. Nice light and sharpness with good detail. Capturing it walking along the ridge has given you a nice bg. I would prefer a sliver more room behind the deer on the left.

Hi Loi very nice capture of ???? what species is this .
Like the tones and overall colors with very good detail extracted . Comp works well for me .
Sharpness is borderline in parts of the fur , for me. Why did you ( i think so ) smooth the BG that much ? , looks too soft for my taste .

Hi Andreas, no smoothing of the BG. It was completely natural of a distant hill, only applied standard NR. I will take another look at the sharpness later tonight. This is a common white-tailed deer.

Thanks Rachel, unfortunately, no room behind or below. This was FF. I had the 1.4X on thinking of birds when we came across this deer.

Loi how did you convert ? LR ,DPP , ACR ? All NR set to zero ? Meaning the luminance NR ?

The deer just demands one to look at it. The background is nicely smooth and darker than the animal. The band of OOF grass at the bottom also focuses one's attention on the animal. A very appealing image.

I did wonder about a bit too much sharpening applied to the fur. It looks pops nicely when viewed at a distance, but up close, it looks a bit crunchy.

Andreas, I converted in LR5 with luminance NR = 0. You were right about sharpness on the borderline though. Thank you. Loi

Hi Loi, interesting to read your reply to Andreas, as I had exactly the same thoughts/impression. Like the low POV and side on elevation of the subject. Agree it's a tad tight on the LHS and based on the SS I think you could have dropped the ISO. I'm guessing, but a slower frame rate would have offered a better RAW, you can easily check the setting, but I feel this was at the high rate?
