    Default Hyena Portrait

This was one of the young hyenas we followed back to its den site one morning in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Our ranger and tracker were excited to learn the den location since the hyenas had recently moved sites.

Lovely detail and I like the horizon in the eye. You must have been very close to get the shallow DOF at 5.6. I feel it may be border line over-sharpened more so on the fur rather than the nose, would it look better a little warmer?...Nice clean portrait.

Hi Rachel love the eye of this beast , very well brought out . Nice tones and detail . Agree with Dumay about the sharpening , a bit overboard in parts . Even that the BG is very busy you have nice separation from the subject .

Super close-up of the Hyena. Great detail with lovely eye contact. I like the composition and the hyena nicely pops against the BG.

Great shot of this oft maligned predator. Love the alert pose and details.

Hi Rachel, nice close up of this youngster and the are quite cute even at this stage, however, later on well...

I think you perhaps just need to look at your Workflow, as often you apply the same elements and here I think either the Curves and or the Selective colour have contributed to the 'contrasty' look and perhaps highlighted with the sharpening, which maybe clashing. Just look at the dark shadows, ears, nose etc they are showing signs of choking. Therefore, my thought would be to back off on any of the blacks, contrast etc and just allow more of those mid tones to come through, that is where your detail is, in doing so i think you will be surprised how much better the image would look, as you gain more definition, just my take. I know you don't like to clone, but the grass stem on the RHS needs to go. I also feel you could loose some off the LHS which wouldn't hurt the overall look & feel.
