    Default Theme: Slag Heap

On a holiday visit to Sedona, Arizona, where the clan gathered for Thanksgiving, we took a train ride through a scenic canyon that also passed through a mining area with this slag heap... I thought, oh, the OOTB theme!

Nik Silver Efex, luminosity blend, then Impression colored pencils, multiply blend back to detail and darken the blacks.

    Thanks for looking.

    Cheers,

I have no idea how the blacks looked before you started, but they sure look good, now. Your pano crop emphasizes the slag nicely.

For a long time, I've been wondering how you manage to insert your image within the text. You break up the backstory and processing very effectively by doing that.

Dennis, type the first part... then insert image: Name: SaveImageHere.jpg

In the text you get a tag (the ATTACH=CONFIG stuff in square braces) which inserts the image in the text. Then continue typing the rest of your message.

Conversely, you can just move that tag (cut and paste) to wherever you want it in your text. (blank lines before and after are good but not necessary).

    Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated.

(Hmm, seems if you attach an image then remove the text the image still remains attached. I attached a png by mistake.)

    Cheers,

So you don't use Manage Attachments? Or do you inset the cursor within your text and, then, use it?

    Dennis,

Oh... no I do not use Manage Attachments. I use that little icon that looks like a tree in a box (rollover Insert Image) just above the text input area. That's probably why you haven't been able to figure out the how to insert the image in the middle of the text. Just the attachment has no anchor inside the message. The ATTACH tag anchors the image within the text. You get the tag with the Insert Image button with the tree.

    Cheers,

Hi, Michael, whoever thought a slag heap could look so nice??? I love the blacks contrasting nicely with the beige and greens. And thanks for the explanation on posting your image - I never knew that and will try it next time.

    It was a silly comment.
I finally figured out the feelings evoked by this image--it feels incongruous--that heap of slag looking so clean set in a crisp, pristine landscape. It does not jibe with my experiences of slag heaps. In my youth, we often traveled through a mining town, passing lots of slag heaps. My memory is of grey, dismal, dirty scenes. Yours is completely different.

As others have said, there is something compelling about the blacks. What would it look like as a B&W convert image?

    Folks,

So some of my thinking on this image... The blacks are enhanced. This was taken in full afternoon light so it looked greyer and less contrasty to the reflective highlights. This is in part a study in contrasts - the dead slag heap against the high desert vegetation, black heap even in the bright sunlight against the color of the sky, land and vegetation. Mitch, the color for me is important with the green, red, blue palette adding to the contrast with black... even in the blacks there is the added red against blue contrast.

Finally, to go with the theme I wanted the blacks to really dominate the image, so I was delighted by your comment Anita!

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Who thought a slag heap could look so good. I like the rich deep blacks and all the textures set off nicely by the sky.
