This juvenile malachite kingfisher ( he has a black beak as opposed to red in adult) finished a preening moment by raising his head feathers for a few seconds.

What a hairdo! Techs are excellent too. Do wish for a slightly better head angle, and like Alan I find the BG to be a little distracting. Have you tried darkening the lighter areas of green?
What a crack up! That hair do is something. The techs look great and I like the colors and the reed perch. I too find the BG a bit distracting but some PS clean up will smooth that out.
I have to ask if you added the catch light as it look a little low in the eye. If not, then my mistake. Nice work as always Gail.

Gail I know some that would pay good money for a hair do like that. Bird looks good agree about the b/g but understand from my own experience with these birds that they do like a bit of cover, would be very pleased if it was mine.
Keith.
Thanks for all the comments.
David, the catchlight is in the correct spot. I did dodge it once ( highlights at 10%) to brighten it up.
I agree with all of you about the BG. As I was firing off 100's of frames of the preening action I knew the BG was an image killer. I deleted most of them except for this one and a few others because of the unusual crown feather display.
I did work on the BG to reduce the saturation and contrast and this was as good as I could get it withour making it too unnatural and weird looking.
Not a contest winner but a fun, behavioral shot.
