Rare for our parts...only 15-20 individuals sighted here since 1970! I thought I'd go visit it, and hope for it to be on the near shore of the Rideau River and come close if so...it did, enough for full-frame head portraits at one point! This is a female that has found her way to Ottawa, very drab compared to the amazing male of the species, but quite attractive in her own way!

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/400s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, cropped for comp (about 80% FF), darkened the pupil, reduced the bluish cast on parts of the plumage.

Great capture Dan. The bird looks good and fits the frame perfectly. Pervect POV and HA. Harlequin are rare over here aswell. Well done and thanks for sharing.

    Nice duck Daniel.
I wish all the bird was in light but not easy sometimes. If mine, I would tone down the light in BG as it seems a bit on the bright side.

Always a great day when you get an image of a rare duck.
I like the low POV and the IQ on the face.
I wonder if this image could use a touch more contrast or a boost of black in the neutrals in selective coloring?
I agree the BG above the bird is a bit bright and would decrease the exposure on this area or perhaps selectively increase the saturation in the blues on the BG.
Lovely image as is but I think a few tweaks would elevate this fine image,
    Gail

I really like the way the water almost wraps around the duck, maybe drab compared to the males but this looks very good to me.

Cute little duck! Love that bow wave she is making. Nice combination of colours and very nicely framed

    Daniel:

Nice opp. to see this rare bird. Great POV.

I do agree about the brightness of the bg. I would consider a version with the luminosity of the bg toned down, as suggested by others.

Quick tweak, with multiply layer on bg only, 82%. You can do much better on the raw and avoid the posterization I have above.

    Cheers

    Randy

Thanks for the suggestions and tweaks, they look great! I'm a fan of high-key, so sometimes I forget that there may be some colour lost in there.
