Taken this morning on Lover's Key. will be here all week so be brutally honest on this one cause i think i may be able to reshoot something like this and would like to get it just perfect!!! this is about a 20% crop. there was a bluish cast so i had to color balance it even after setting the B&W control points. ran NR on the BG and selectively sharpened the bird. i also darkened the bg and left the bird alone. does the white on the belly look too hot? it doesnt look hot at all on the RAW!!
D300, Bigma at 500mm, f/8, 1/2000s, -0.6EV, ISO 400, no flash. i was mixing in shooting some flight shots so i left the ISO on 400. should i have used ISO 200 instead and just concentrated on my shorebirds instead?
thanks and comments and critiques are appreciated!!!!
Hi Harold,
Nice bird! good perspective, detail and head angle. the upper belly does look a little hot and perhaps a bit less contrast? Have fun trying for that perfect shot!
Katie
Hi Harold Agree on the contrast It does seem to be a little hot (not much and that is being critical) Again soft light is the key !!! Must be sounding like a broken record. We all like to photograph for longer periods of time but the magical hour only lasts one hour or so !!!
If you wish to improve on this one hit the ground !!!! A real low perspective will give you an even better image IMO. It will also allow you to get closer to the birds. They actually walk right up to you !!! When doing these little guys look for foot action (don't laugh). I normally try having one leg in the air or going forward. Other than the head angle is the second most important thing to look for !!! Good luck tomorrow ... I'm still playing with the spoons and getting oystercatchers in flight !!!!
Mr. Harold,
This is a very nice capture. No nits from me, they have been covered. I wounder how low of an angle you can do on something like this? I have tried it before and have not had much luck...because I wind up propping my lens with my elbows on the ground...( 15 to 18 inches off ground ) I saw a guy at the beach the other day where he had his camera and lens resting on the wet sand...:eek::eek: not for me...:D
FRISBEES FOR CAMERAS!!!! i'm gonna start a new business of reselling old frisbees for scooting across the sand. problem from where i was shooting last two days was that its not flat!!! so its tough to get as low of a perspective as you could if it were perfectly flat. and small shells suck too!!! heck on the knees!!!
