Hello , I hope everyone is well and you didn't miss me too much. As some of you know I took a slight break from photography this year and finally after 9 months I've decided to get back at it.

I am really rusty in the post processing and in camera framing department hence the title.

Taken during a family trip to Tofino, BC this past September. Picking up a lens after 9 months proved to be as challenging as I thought it would be.

    Techs | Canon 1d Mark IV | 500mm F4 | 1/400 | F5.6 | ISO1250 | Manual | Handheld | Boat

I can't help but think the colour and textures are just not right in this but I need to just take deep breath and ease back into PS or it'll be another nine months break .

    Hope everyone is well

    Jamie

Apart from the cut bottom I do like it. I would be tempted to lower the mount of blue in the bear itself, warm it up a touch.

Hi Jamie, as I mentioned, good to see you getting back into the saddle again and we can 'kick some butt' in Feb/March.

Apart from the 'cute' bottom and being too close the the trim, the image content looks very nice, good clarity and sharpness, something I think that was frustrating you, good old MKIV & 500.Personally I would have gone to 1600 just for a hint more SS and IQ would not have suffered. Like the look to camera and the drooling mouth. Might have gone for the 70-200 with the 1.4x, faster lens, lighter as you were shooting from the boat and would had given you more space all round, this would have been great to have the environment/habitat shoreline in, adding to the storyline. Agree with Neil, helps the black, the seaweed is quite vibrant, but that is, as is.

Lets see more, you are on a roll now and your 'apprentice' is of an age where he too, can learn, LOL, but don't sit on the gym ball whilst doing the PP work.

Hi Jamie - Welcome back! You have been missed and so have your bears. Nice detail in the blacks. I too would have gone for a bit more ss especially shooting from a boat but you've achieved good sharpness. Of course, I would prefer if the rear wasn't clipped but the mud coming off the mouth really adds to the image. Maybe a crop to a vertical portrait is an alternate presentation that would work. Dropping the blues is an easy fix too. Keep them coming.

    TFS,
    Rachel

    Hello Jamie!

Nine months is a very long time but we still remember you:), in fact we've been waiting for your return

Lovely bear image and some very nice detail in the fur, would like to know what this big fella was munching on?

Looks sharp to me, although a SS of 1/400s with a 500mm lens can be risky, especially when no firm support is possible. I like the environment here and especially the greens. Pity about the bum a little "tight" in the frame, I think Rachel's suggestion of a vertical crop might do the trick.

Hope you don't go away again and really looking forward to some more images,

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hey Buddy! Awesome facial expression, drool, eye contact, detail in the blacks, sharpness (amazing given shooting a 500m at 1/400 from a boat), and colors with the rocks and seaweed. Agree with the other comments about a bit of blue coming through on the bear and possibly trying a portrait / vertical comp instead. It's also a tad tight on the bottom, so a sliver more room there would be nice, if possible. Glad to see you back in the saddle again with your photography, but be sure to keep up on the running too - your accomplishments this year were awesome!

Hi Jamie welcome back after some time , could you get your hands off your game machine , or have tried editing and posting images on that machine ? Maybe Steve told you after a while, that it will not work this way !!!!

Do not blame me for this , good to see you back and hope you will be more active in the near future .

Nice opener of the bear , have not seen many black bears in the past .I like the frame in general , leaving the nits aside that are already covered by others .

So get your hands ready and shoot/post if you find the time .

    TFS Andreas

Excuse the late reply, I clearly haven't got my priorities in check just yet when it comes to photography.

Funny you should recall my comments about being distracted by my Xbox back in February Andreas. I ended up hardly touching it at all this year after I decided in March to get my self into shape.

Thanks for all your comments. I wish this was not as tight but when you are not piloting the boat and working with bears that are terrible posers it can be a little tough when it comes to knowing exactly when you have the right lens for the job. Tofino is somewhere you need to go for a week or so and try and get out every day as so often the conditions are challenging but as frustrating as they are it can also be extremely rewarding when you are prepared and not rusty.

    Cheers

    Jamie
