Hi folks going the opposite of Rachel with her Leopard cub .
I took this image of a Springbok male during one of my midday sessions at Craig Lockhardt WH in KTP .
Shot was actually taken in the shade of that one large Accacia tree that is standing there and where animals and humans try to find a "cool" place in the hot time of the day .

All Antelopes came very close to the car .So took the opportunity to play around with various crops , exposures , DOF etc . on all subjects.

With this one i went for a high key effect .

    Canon EOS 1D MK IV
    EF 500 IS L
Free swinging lens support as described in another thread

    F 9 ; Iso 800 ; 1/1000 sec ; man exposure

Processed with Capture One 8 and PS CC ; slight crop for comp

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous thread .

    Cheers Andreas

I like this high key look & the total focus on the beautiful and elegant head of this male. It does seem the eye has more contrast to it that the rest of the animal. But to make the eye less contrasty, I fear it would look too lifeless. Maybe add just a bit more contrast to the entire animal. I would consider making the tans in the upper right corner less obvious as they should be just a hint of color and not attract the eye at all from the high key look of the animal.

Thanks Peter and Nancy for your comments , i was unsure how much detail would be good to be visible in this high key frame . I am still 50/50 which route to go , so i will wait and see what others come with.

Regarding swinging lens support , i actually have no images of this , but will try to take some and start a thread about this , thanks Peter .

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas, it's always good to experiment. Good composition and sharpness. I think the subject is much too bright for my taste, but I like the high key BG.

Hi Andreas - a nice close up portrait of this impala ram. My thoughts were along the lines of Loi's. I would prefer more natural color and detail on the subject itself but maintaining the high key bg.

Hi Andreas, compositionally I think it works, but sadly it doesn't work overall for me, irrespective of hi key, it just has the appearance of just being too washed out for my taste sadly, but this is why a forum is good, as you get different perspectives. As a keeper, I would loose the darker elements in the top right BKG and so you have a uniform colour to sit the subject against.

So i will try again ..... maybe .

Steve any good suggestion for a high key ? Is it not always the case that high key images does look kind of washed out ?

Andreas, I only go that route if the image content directs me that way. I shot the latest image both ways 'in the field' as I was thinking about the options for the PP stage and preferred the very stark Black & White option. I think this is where we have to make the decision on what best suits the image and take control, rightly or wrongly. You could Dropbox the image, gladly have a look?

Andreas, this is a nice high key image. The content and framing is so good that it is worth experimenting and I like the original post a lot. The RP is 'different' and well worth the effort.

    Hello again Andreas,

The lion you just posted took me by surprise and I spent quite some time viewing, now I am back to this image which by the way I briefly looked at earlier but needed some time to make up my mind about it...

I found the OP a tad "washed-out", despite the fact that I quite liked the subtle whites and off whites there. Apart from the eye - the focus of my attention - too black blacks would have been undesirable, considering the effect you wanted to achieve. A beautiful portrait and lovely detail where needed, I particularly like the steely look of the horns in the second image, there is a lack of warmth in places in this RP but I find that effect quite pleasing. This would make a lovely print, I am sure

Looking forward to see the rest of your images,

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

All been said - the repost does it for me, has the punch that the OP lacked. I would also just add more saturation in the repost, WDYT?
