Default Keeping the 'Clan' theme going...

This is one of the Hyena pups we found after discovering their den on a morning game drive. Perhaps not so habituated as other sites as the den had not been found, therefore their curiosity got the better of them and they became more inquisitive providing your were not silly or loud, LOL. The area around the den was less than ideal, so close quarter shooting IMHO, was required. The shot I posted a short while ago of a female standing was from this clan. I'm cool about the blades of grass being in, no need for any removal I feel. I also like the DoF, nose to eyes good, the rest just drifts off so all you see is this cute face, underlying what it will turn into in a very shot space of time.

Thanks for swinging by or commenting on the previous image.

Hi Steve- I think this works well with the inquisitive in your face pose. I like the tight vertical comp. Nice detail and tones. So from your description this was at our last stop?

Steve, the image has a nice '3D' feel to it, I like the vertical comp and the tight head shot works very well IMO.

Hi Steve -- Great image here; I just love how inquisitive these little pups are at the den sites. Agree about the DOF and leaving in the branches for some context. As usual, awesome processing, especially given the high ISO. IMHO it's a tad tight to the ears on each side and I might back off just a touch if it was mine and there was room.

I really like the detail and direct eye contact...the shallow DOF...really makes the face stand out.

That stare, really draws you in!

Nice portrait, very tight but enough DoF to make it work

    Dear Steve,

I am thinking I should "collect" your images and put them in a folder entitled "Steve-things that work". The composition works for me, colours are stunning and so natural, that velvet black rubbery nose I am tempted to touch. No trace of PP work or evidence of sharpening, don't know how you do it but I hope to find out some day

Love your work, thank you for sharing your images and for pointing me into the right direction when I get a bit lost - I really appreciate it.

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Steve, very nice look into the camera of the puppie.
Great color and tone as most of the times , well done . DOF is quite shallow but just enough for making this work nicely , guiding the viewer to the main aspects of this frame.

If you have a bit more space on both sides would be better , because you chopped of the tip of the hairs .
Maybe i am the only one but the image does look a wee bit soft to me , meaning i would expect some more "cracking detail " from the 1 DX , talking specially about the bridge of the nose , basically areas who are in focus .
But maybe you wanted to achieve that , i guess.

    TFS Andreas

    Thanks folks.

Mark, I tend to crop as much in camera as possible, in the field, but leaving some room all around for that final crop at PP stage, however in this case with branches etc being so distracting I just let the pup walk in and fill the frame. Andrea, if I went back to my previous route of sharpening then I could pull more out for web, but tend to leave it for standard screen output now, perhaps I could think about reverting back, but as no screen will show you the true result even at 300ppi then I'm ok providing they meet Agency approval.

Steve well how do you say ... your call .
I judge , like you do , on my screen. For me still it looks like you have used a softening effect . There is a lot of fine hairs in the focal area and they seem to be lost in all that softness , but your call .
I have seen raw images from you in the past , so i know what you can produce , the detail is there ........

In the end i am fine with it , just sharing my thoughts and leaving it you how to present your images ..

    Cheers Andreas

Just love it! The DOF, colours and exposure are excellent.
