Hi all ,
time to participate in this month Theme.
Think this gemsbok close up fits quite well .
During the hottest time of the day i was hanging out at Craig Lockhardt WH in KTP . It was b.l.o.o.d.y hot around 40 degrees , Andre and Gabriela left ......... because they could not stand the heat , sitting in the car . I fought the elements and got the option to get this female coming very close .
Honestly Andre and Gabriela went because their car batteries were running flat , due to the fridge /freezer usage .
Canon EOS 1D MK IV
EF 500 IS L
Swinging lens support
F 5,6 ; Iso 400 ; 1/1600 sec ..... should have stopped down for more DOF , would have gone away with slower SS . FF no crop .

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous thread
Hi Andreas - Great to see you experimenting in this way. The eye does grab one's attention. I agree with your self-assessment of a bit more dof. I find myself wanting to see more of the horn though. It feels a bit truncated with the horn as is to me but I realize you framed the way you did to get the ear in. Not sure if a tighter comp would work to eliminate the feeling.
Hi Andreas -- I like this perspective and am fine with not seeing more of the horn this time. This does a nice job to accentuate the eye and stark black vs. white contrast in the face. Love the alert "perked up" ear. Agree on stopping down. Have you considered lifting some more of the shadow in the ear? Sounds like a crazy hot day out there
This is so lovely, do you remember me telling you it would make such a lovely print? So glad you posted, been waiting for this image for some time now!
I notice there's also a little bee catching a bit of moisture from the eye - would you consider making the little bee more visible, if possible?
I looked for other ways of cropping but came to conclusion that this is the best option from the proportion POV. Had you gone square and lost the muzzle would also work for me. Then there's the option of taking off just a tad at the bottom (including the white on the nose). Works for me either way
The detail is just wonderful and my eyes are drawn to the eye but also to the funnel-shaped ear, love those fine hairs !
Both myself and Andre were viewing this at the same time, we found ourselves enlarging the image to see if your vehicle is reflected in the eye:)
And yes, in hindsight maybe you should have pushed the F-stop, but as I said, I really like it just the way it is, so well done my friend, congratulations!!!
Hey, it was really hot sometimes in the Kalahari, and especially at Mata Mata! And yes we had to start the car and drive around to get the fridge/freezer going by charging the battery, sometimes we missed out on stuff but we normally don't know about it because there's no one to tell us what's been going on...I am a bit jealous of your lion sightings, after we departed. But I forgive you You have been the most enjoyable, easy going companion and so willing to help with everything, we shall never forget the laughter and the jokes we shared, the late evenings by the fire, the PP talks, the two-way radio talks, and the early morning coffee passed through the window...We shall miss you in February
Have a fabulous evening Andreas, we are thinking of you !
OOH Gabriela love your ability of taking your for such nice and warm wording ......... love you to bits for this .
Thanks to Sanjeev , Rachel,Andre and Mark for comments and suggestions .
Rachel the horn is just too long as you know to get more into the frame without loosing the tightness and the eye as the major subject plus that ear !!!
As Gabriela and Andre have seen in the evening in camp , i have numerous images with all sorts of different views , all tight like this one or even tighter .
Gabriela i tried to bring out that little bee , just for you . BTW i know you are awaiting a special Wildebeest ........ will come just be patient
Cheers Andreas

Now I can see the little bee! And the RP is sharper, mmm... even more detail, I am looking at the ear now and those little hairs, as well as the eye - whatever you have done, it WORKS!
I am so looking forward to the Wildebeests!!! And after you post that, there'll be one of you taking images of the wildebeests, from me!
Sounds like some fun over the next few weeks and some stunners too:)
