    Default 7D2 Snow Goose Flight

The action was pretty slow at the Bosque, but I did manage a few flight frames. I don't have any real impressions about the 7D2's AF yet, because I had so few opportunities to test the body out on BIF. I used the new Zone AF Area Selection Mode. It's a box of 12-15 AF points in which the AF points are selected automatically. In this mode you can enable EOS iTR AF, a mode that allows the camera to track faces and subject colors. This feature is available in the 1Dx but not the 5D3. I was impressed with how well it tracked Snow Geese, but I suspect it won't fare as well with more challenging subjects.

Hi Doug - love the pose, the bg and the detail in the whites; makes me feel like I want to touch the softness of the feathers. Waiting to see more of your 7D2 images and of course, your assessment.

    Best,
    Katie

very nice indeed, how did the success rate of sharp shots compare to your experience with the 1Dx

Nice pose and perfect exposure Doug! love the drama of landing. The BG really makes it stand out. I'd prefer a bit more sharpening and a touch more detail in the whites on the far wing as well as the blacks. -1.5 HL, +1.5 SH in DPP 4.0 would do the trick.

iTR should work well picking up a white goose against gold, but if it were a burrowing owl or a peregrine falcon in the same frame my guess is it would latch to the BG pretty quickly and stay there. I almost never use it on my 1DX.

    Doug:

    Excellent pose, bg, framing, exposure.

Agree with Arash about the whites on the far wing. Exposure is fine, but jot much detail in the leading edge.

    Cheers

This would be my processing: Recovered more detail for highlights and shadows from RAW, applied a bit NR to the shadows and sharpened more.

Nice looking landing pose Doug. Probably not the toughest challenge for the new body but looks like it locked on well. Nice and sharp too. Arash's repost looks better in terms of the whites. Well done.

Looks great against that background, the focus looks good. Keep posting flight shots, I am sure we all want more info on the camera.

Excellent flight image....I like the background. The reworked image, for me, appears a little over cooked (emphasis on little) particularly on the underparts. The original appears quite natural on the underparts and the reworked image does not, in that the shading has lost the natural graduation of shade which one would expect to see: the shading has become more uniform in places, lost some detail and appears just a little funky. I think a careful rework mid way between the two images would result in a superb image IMHO.

Sweet shot. Landing pose is killer and the background couldn't get any better.
