    Default Baboons in the sunset

    Attached Images Attached Images

Photographed along the Chobe River in Botswana from the photo boat. For the theme I like both the texture of the fur of the baboons plus the texture of the dried and scattered elephant dung. My camera settings were set to follow a game of chase and then I saw this pose of two other baboons momentarily, took several images, and then back to the chasing baboons. The original was very reddish due to the setting sun. However it seemed to be too much and I greatly reduced in the red in Hue/Saturation. Now it seems a bit flat. Suggestions?

Canon 1DX, Canon 500 f4 L IS (rented), 1/6400, f5.6, exp. comp. +1/3, ISO 1600, with tripod permanently mounted on the photo boat.

Been visiting family and am now back home at my computer.

    Comments and critiques most appreciated.

Nice interaction between the two. Must be some kind of goodies in that dung for the baboons to spend so much time with it. The image doesn't look flat to me, has a nice gilded gold look to it.

Hi Nancy - nicely spotted moment of interaction with good low pov. The image doesn't look flat to me either. If it were mine I would tame the highlights a bit more with a luminosity mask at about 30% and also drop the yellows slightly. There are also some specular highlights to the right of the baboons that I would blend or eliminate. Looking forward to seeing some of the chase too.

    TFS,
    Rachel

I like this very much, Nancy. The intimate interaction is enhanced by that "gilded gold" light (thanks, Steve Canuel). Makes me want to say awwwww.

Body language and the faces of these two are really priceless. Like two children playing in a sand pit!

    Really made me smile!

    Thanks.

Hi Nancy , great intimate moment captured between the two .I quite like the comp and overall tonality .Good detail and sharpness.

If the colors has been rich i actually would not get rid of the reds , saying this without having seen those reds . Would be good if you could post a colorful version for comparison .

It looks now a bit like a rich toned B/W , well almost .

Cute moment here Nancy. Eye contact isn't everything, eh? I usually say in my talks to photography clubs/events that if the animal is staring down the barrel of your lens then they are not doing much else and you are actually intruding instead of observing...

Thank you very much all! You have given me some additional ideas for further processing. Maybe add back some red, remove some yellow...remove specular highlights...

Morkel, I'm glad to hear what you say about eye contact. I was hesitant to post this just for that reason.
