Reptiles also make good subjects for this month's textures theme. This one was taken in the Timbavati Game Reserve, South Africa. While I think Steve preferred using his flash, I played with images lit by the tracker's spotlight.

Certainly fits in well with the 'texture' theme with great detail on the body. I'm not normally a big fan of artificial light, but it has worked well in this instance, The background looks a little posterized, have you done much PP or is it down to the size limits here?

You did really well under the artificial lighting conditions, great detail, nicely composed and the dark BG really makes the subject stand out! TFS.

This is a cool shot Rachel. Love the curled tail tip.

Very striking and appealing image. Very nice. I wonder if toning down the pinkish leaves located directly below the animal's midsection would help.

This approach works well, Rachel. I prefer spot-lit to flash in terms of look.

Hi Rachel, it's tough to shoot with just the spot light. I think you did very well here with good IQ and useable ISO. I think the subject is a little bright. I'd play around with the exposure to darken the BG and reduce the brightness on the subject. Brendon showed a couple of good examples a while back. Loi

Very nice shot Rachel I have played around with the highlights I would suggest lowering them a little.
I would have used a flash with diffuser (easy in retrospect I suppose) but I think the light would have been more even.

Hi Rachel i go with Mike regarding night shots .
But this came out not too bad , in terms of look and feel .
Was this overexposed as shot ? Because there is not much detail in the HL and they do look washed /greyed out .
But anyway good to try different stuff .

Hi Rachel, the spotlight was far more forgiving, nicely framed and the 'black of the night' worked as good backdrop.

Very nice agree with Morkel, I am not a big flash guy as well. Love the textures and the dark background.
