    Default Elephant Textures

I thought I would start off November's Theme of "Textures." This is a theme that we hope you'll have some fun with and experiment a bit. Taken in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa. We encountered this lone ele near a waterhole late on a morning game drive and he was a fairly cooperative subject.

    Canon 5D3
    300 II
    1/800
    f5
    ISO 400
HH from a safari vehicle, ff, levels, curves, Nik Detail Extractor at 3%, sharpened in CCPS.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Hi Rachel, good choice of subject, will follow suit, but as it's remotely it will be the same subject, not ideal.

Like the wrinkles, folds, creases and dimpled texture of the skin, you almost feel he will eventually fill that skin, needs to grow into it. Surprised about your choice of DoF, seems to have worked although I think more would have been better avoiding DE, at 3% was DE required? Your call on the ear, I think you could loose it, likewise adding an angled Graduate filter just to tone down and bring a hint more depth back across the top LHC.

Excellent image to start off the theme of the month Rachel. Ele's are such great subjects to experiment different compositions. I like the detail, the sharpness and the tones in your image. Steve has some good observations and agree with most. The ear is Ok with me.

Nice shot. One of the things I like about this image is the subtle line texture in the shadows particularly with the cross-hatch pattern. Gives it depth without being obvious. Great share.

Thanks Steve, Sanjeev and John, much appreciated. Steve - I wondered about the aperture choice as well when I saw it. From what I remember and can tell from the surrounding images, the elephant kept changing positions from in the light to shaded based on the angle his head was at as he approached us. I think the f5 was to get enough ss either way.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Then push the ISO, you were using the 5D.

Shadows are just right. Also like the sloping line from the eye brow ridge down to the trunk. Nice close up.

Hi Rachel , nice work with tones /contrast and comp . A bit more DOF for the forehead would not have hurt .
Good job in bringing out some nice texture and detail .
