    Thanks so much for all the previous comments and advice (David, Arash, Grace, Marina and others (really appreciated it) . I decided to try a vertical crop and increase the catch-light in the eyes as suggested. And have done two versions one "as is" just with improved brightness and vibrancy AND then one with the background toned down (as per Grace's suggestion).

    Good work, Richard. I prefer the vertical presentation and of these two, the second works best in my opinion. I brought the image into PS and did some burning on the owl's back and a little more sharpening on the head.

    Great looking owl, with wonderful feathery ears. The vertical works nicely. I'm not seeing a lot of difference in the two panes on my screen, but have a slight preference for #2. Marina's suggestions will help.

    Beautiful shot! I like the second one. Love the eye contact, pose and composition.
