Thought I'd add one more for this month's theme as I don't think I've got much for next month. Shot at about 8:30am, an approaching storm had coated things with a layer of frost the night before and the snow was starting to fall. The elk were active and this dominant bull was answering a distant challenger's call echoing through the woods. I've got others with more of a profile view but none of him bugling towards me as the call was coming from the woods in the BG. And since the theme is horns and antlers I thought this shot showed them off well. I also liked the cool mood and the feel of peering over his shoulder and waiting to see if the challenger would ever appear. 7D, 400DO, f4.5, 1/100s, ISO 1000, tripod mount, full frame.
Hi Steve, like those impressive antlers! Nice pose and good sharpness. A little tight on the left, but no deal breaker. the image looks a little bright, but I'm on a Mac lap top, so can't be sure. Loi
Great set of antlers, nice detail on the bull and cool pose. Wish it was angled a bit more towards us, but no deal breaker as it shows off the antlers nicely!
Hi Steve, love the cool colour palette on this, nice soft tones and hues, almost has a painting feel to the whole image. Agree that it is a bit tight in frame on the LHS and perhaps a hint more at the foot, looking slightly away is not ideal, but I think this works as the trees in the BKG could be 'breath' as the Stag bellow and so for me it does work. Techs look good, likewise the PP, just wonder if you had shot this with the 5D3 how it would have looked?
Hi Steve - It certainly does show those antlers well and a perfect bugling pose, even if angled slightly away. I really like the color palette of the bg and painterly feel to it. Agree a little more room on the left would be preferable.
I'm betting you actually have images for next month's theme. Think about the textures in a big horn ram's horn, the velvet of an antler or the shaggy coat of a mountain goat just as examples.
Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. Agreed, need more space behind him. Would've had to pack up and move up a hill behind me or pull out the 100-400L to get more room. And since he was moving across the field I wasn't sure if I'd have time to get more shots.
Steve,
Funny you asked about the 5D. Only owned the 7D at the time and was wondering as I was processing for posting how much better it would've looked with a 5D.
