Occasionally I get this artifact, I don't know what it is, when present it is usually restricted to one image in a file. I am wondering if it is a fault on the compact flash card or perhaps something to do with reviewing images before the buffer may have been written?? Any ideas any one?

I've seen things like this on occasion and I think it's an issue that occurs while writing the image to the card. I'd mark that card and see if it seems to be specific to it; it could be a sign of impending failure.

Others here can give a better answer.

I saw a similar pattern artifact (similar colors and lines) when I copied images from a USB drive that was formatted and files saved with a Mac and then saved to a PC using HFSExplorer. The images looked normal when viewed on the MBA. I'd guess that about 5% of the transferred images showed the artifacts. To correct the problem, I copied files from the MBA to the PC via my network. I assumed the problem with the artifacts was due to HFSExplorer. However, Jonathan's post makes me wonder what actually causes artifacts like the one shown in his image.

I would give your card a scan, maybe a bad sector on there. Nice jay too!

I have since found that the card is corrupt. I cannot read it when I plug it into my PC but I can read it when I leave it in the camera and connect the camera. I reformatted it on the PC - it worked once but it's playing up again. I am going to chuck it because it is a pain in the ....
