I photographed this elk last week in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, early evening. The males are still in rut, bugling and protecting the harem.

    Canon 1Dx, Canon 200-400 f4 L IS with ext 1.4 @ 560, 1/400, f6.3, ISO 1600, exp. comp. +2/3, tripod.

All comments and critiques most appreciated.

Hi Nancy - Nice pose, dof and sharpness. Is this ff? I might have tried to shift the whole comp a bit to the left so that there was more room on the left than the right but it it's one of those awkward moments to frame because the eye is looking to the right. I think you can tame the highlights a bit and would look at doing so with a luminosity mask in the red channel. It brings out the fall tones a bit more too.

    TFS,
    Rachel

A bit of a head turn would've been nice but the comp works for me because of his alignment with the boulders across the BG and the "just enough" look of the eye across the frame.

I like the image very much, he looks like he is on a mission alright! I like the angle, almost as if he is preoccupied but he just had a crafty glance at you. I think I would tone down the foreground grasses a little - just a shade bright for me.

Good advice Rachel, Steve & Jonathon. Thank you! I'll work on the suggestions.
