    Default Ice and Goldfinch

On April 2, 2014 Cape Breton,Nova Scotia experienced an ice storm. We lost power for a day and school and offices were closed for 2 or 3 days. The tree branches were bowed down to the ground because of the weight of the ice and the wind was blowing them continuously causing them to sway significantly. This is a shot that I can't decide if I like or not. The lighting was very tricky here and although I like the" ice lattice" I am not sure about the bird.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this one. Yeh or Nay?

Very cool Gail, literally. The ice lattice is beautiful and makes for a very interesting and unique setting for this little bird. The techs look great and the bird is nice and sharp.
That splash of yellow in all that monochrome looks great. Nice vision and execution.

This is very unique, Gail, and I am really loving the feel. Love the lattice look of the ice enveloped twigs and how well your bird pops against it. My only wish here is that the were not an empty spot just above/behind the bird b/c my eye seems to be wandering that way.

Hi Gail - I really like the image design here with the ice and placement of the goldfinch in the frame. Nice colors, details and sharpness too.

Quite lovely, Gail. Love the comp, and the colorful molting Goldfinch stands out beautifully in the wintry scene. There's a strange crescent shape below and to the right of the bird, a specular highlight I guess.

Hi Gail, as we dont get to see scenes like this in my home area during our winter, I like this lots. Love how the ice has enveloped the small branches, and Goldfinch pops so well with the yellows against your wintery BG.

A wonderful artistic setting. Evokes a Robert Bateman. If it were mine, I'd lighten the darker areas of the bird a little, with a masked curve.

    Gail:

I do like it, strong graphic feel because of the ice. After studying it for a second, I think the 'perfect' version would have been if the bird had landed so he filled the space above him. Would have given him better separation from the iced branches.

I think Diane's repost helps the bird compete better with all the light areas of ice.

    Cheers

thanks to all for commenting and kudos to Diane for the repost. you identified and fixed what i didn't like about the image but couldn't figure out exactly what i didn't like about it.
i do have another image a second later in which the bird is not against the empty space. i will revisit it.

Glad you like it, Gail! Murphy's 342nd corollary: The most interesting portion of an image will always be the area of lowest contrast and brightness.

I like the ice covered branches, composition and how the colours of the Goldfinch stand out. Very well done Gail.
