Hi Carl- I find it is really tough to get a good image of a single wildebeest and you accomplished that. So congrats and well done. Beautiful soft light and good detail and sharpness with a creamy bokeh. I might try to lessen the effect of the brighter oof grass/branches above the horns. You've managed to give the wildebeest some character too.
I am watching your images buddy Carl, and I really think your photography skills have grown by leaps and bounds in such a short time! Lovely portrait of this wildebeest in great light, beautiful colours and nice detail, I like your careful processing-great work!
Hi Carl not an easy subject to get an nice image .
You managed to get a wonderful portrait with both eyes very good visible ...... very well done.
I like the overall color/tone palette . Lovely framing and good details .
A minor thing mentioned by Rachel , i agree with her
Love them eyes!
Stunning comp.
Agree with Rachel about branches @ horns, clone them out..
Nice detail all around, killer BG.
The right ear's lower part seems a bit soft?!
By the time I read through the above comments, I have nothing new to say. I agree with all that this is a great up-close wildebeest image! Love the almost coy tilt to the head and the clearly visible eye. I do see what appears to be a dark line running through the red and skimming the pupil. If that is not an eye lash I would probably remove it.
Hi Carl, you did well, DoF looks good, with detail and sharpness from eye to nose which is key. BKG works, with the soft green, but addressing the few highlights would improve things without question. Personally I would have liked a bit more head turn towards camera, this may also have help with the ear intersecting the horn, but again, in an ideal world. I also think a bit more breathing space around the subject would have helped too, do the initial frame/cropping in the field, leaving a bit more space all round and so allowing yourself the flexibility once you are at the PP stage to do the final framing.
I agree with Gabriela, your PP has improved nicely, allowing you to build on the initial capture, well done, keep things up, as overall your photography & PP will quickly improve as you gather momentum.
Hi Rachel,Gabriela, Andreas, Nancy, Sanjeev, Andre and Steve. Thanks for the comments and advice.
Nancy its an eye lash.
I left the highlights in as I didn't find it too distracting at the time but will look at that.
